Design Capstone Show and Reception

Our graduating Design (Visual Communication) majors have set up an exhibition of their capstone work at the Kirksville Arts Association (1902 South Baltimore, Suite 100).  Come and see their creative endeavors and get a chance to talk with them about their work and future plans. Their celebratory reception is Friday, May 11th, the evening before graduation. Congratulations to all our graduating seniors!

Suzy Williams, BFA ’08: Designer and Successful Quilter

Suzy Williams earned her BFA in VisCom in 2008, and has found success by combining both areas.  We just heard from her about what she has been doing.  Suzy writes:

What has been exciting in my transition from full-time graphic design to textile design is seeing the two art forms connect so well. The Fibers Department was the original reason I chose Truman, but the convergence of design and technology I found in the VisCom department is what grabbed my attention in the end.
I now use the skills I learned in VisCom as a base for designing all of my quilts and patterns. I use Illustrator to layout my designs, choose colors and quickly and efficiently determine the math behind the sewing. InDesign is the program I use to layout the PDF patterns I sell.

I believe these foundational graphic design skills give me an added edge over other quilters and textile designers who do not have the tech background.
To give you an example of what I mean, here are both a digital sketch and a quilt of my design “Triangle Jitters.” This pattern is currently being sold in my online shop.

Three of my quilts were featured in QuiltCon 2016 this past February; they include Mod Mountains, Drip and Modern Fans . Mod Mountains (below) received a third place award for handwork.”

OP Output Center Now Online

Over the summer the Visual Communications faculty oversaw the renovation of the former Design Studio to house a new student-run inkjet printing service. The OP Output Center is sponsored by the Visual Communications program and the Art Department and is housed in Ophelia Parrish 1250.Our MakerBot Mini 3D printer will allow you to print in a variety of colors.

The facility offers a large format (44”) lamination service.  It houses two medium format (24”), photo-quality, EPSON Stylus Pro Roll-feed, Inkjet printers, one large format (44”) Hewlett-Packard Roll-feed printer, two medium format (17” and 24”) sheet-fed inkjet printers and two MakerBot Mini 3D printers (shown at left).

The Output Center serves the entire campus community as well as providing printing resources for the Visual Communications, Studio Art and Art History programs. OP Output Center offers student workers experiential opportunities to develop and refine project management, digital/technical and customer service skill sets.
