Prof. Kambli news!

Prof. Priya Kambli (Studio:  Photography) has had great successes this last semester!

  • She was invited to attend the third annual New York Portfolio Review! Her work was chosen from among 3500 portfolios and she traveled on Saturday, April 11th 2015 to a day of reviews and community in New York City.

 

  • An interview, accompanied by work, was published in Black and White Photography (174).

News from Alumni

We always love to hear from alums of the Art Department.  Here’s some of the great recent news we’ve received!

Leah Bowring received her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Mamie Cox writes:  “I will be studying at Newnham College at Cambridge University [in the UK]. Continuing research I began in my undergraduate [Art History] thesis on illustrations of anthropomorphic animals in children’s literature, I will complete a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature.

Taylor (Wysocke) Henry and her husband had their home featured in the finale of the DIY Network’s show Desperate Landscapes.

Lori Nix had her work featured in the February 9, 2015 issue of Newsweek: http://www.newsweek.com/2015/02/20/post-mankind-vision-photographer-lori-nix-305531.html 

Kelsey Wiskirchen is currently doing a fibers residency at the Appalachian Center for Crafts – a part of Tennessee Tech University in Smithville, Tennessee.  She writes:  “It is a satellite campus of Tennessee Technological University, which offers a BFA program in fibers, metals, woods, clay, and glass. During the summer, the Craft Center offers a program of weeklong workshops in all of the studios. I help manage the fibers studio, teach classes in Foundations and Fibers, and teach in the high school outreach program.”  Kelsey shared some photographs with us which are included below.

Summer activities in Art!

Summer has arrived in Kirksville and the students, faculty, and staff in the Art Department will be taking full advantage of it.  Here are a few notes about what we’ve heard about from some faculty and students about summer plans:

Faculty

Dr. Sara Orel (Art History) writes:  “I will be working on two long-simmering Egyptological projects: the publication of the Gebel el-Haridi survey from the 1990s, and the re-examination of the excavations by John Garstang at Beni Hasan more than a century ago.  In addition, I am attending the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) business meeting, and beginning my third year as chair of the Arts and Humanities Division of CUR.”

Prof. Ping Xu (Visual Communications) will take five Visual Communications students to China for internships at TBWA Worldwide and McCann Workgroup Shanghai.

Students

Vis Comm students Will Genazzi, Nick Hollander, Olivia Brady, Lauren Jin, and Conner Frazier will join Prof. Xu’s study abroad trip.

Katie Feldkamp (Art History-History double major) writes:  “This summer I will be interning at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City. I will be working with the education coordinator to create different public programs and gain a better understanding of the mission of a museum.”

Duncan Holahan (Art History major) writes:  “For my summer I will be spending a month abroad in Málaga, Spain taking a course at the Universidad de Malaga on Spanish Art and Architecture.”

Dani Martin (Art History-Anthropology double major) will travel to Ireland for six weeks where she will tour various Medieval castles and cathedrals, as well as participate in an archaeological dig at Isert Kelly.

Emma Shouse (Art History major) has been accepted to do an internship with Saving Antiquities for Everone (SAFE).  Ms. Shouse will be working on social media writing, centering on Syria and Iraq, with possibly also some posts about Yemen.

Matt Treasure (Art History major) will participate in an archaeological dig under the direction of faculty from Pennsylvania State University at ancient Mendes in the Egyptian delta.

Vis Comm Senior Portfolio exhibition closing reception tonight!

Please join us tonight (Friday, May 8, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.) at the Kirksville Arts Association for the closing reception for “Into the Unknown:  Vis Comm Voyagers Design Exhibition” (Visual Communications Senior Capstone Portfolio exhibition).  It’s a great chance to see some wonderful art and to congratulate these seniors.  The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.  We hope to see you there!

Finals Week in the Art Department (and some awards as well)

As those on Truman’s campus will know, this week is Finals Week–so, lots going on in the Art Department whether it’s final exams, final critiques, studio cleaning, and the like.  Here are a few of the additional things going on this week–hope to see you there!

Monday, May 4, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.  Exhibition of Work by Painting I students.  OP south atrium.

Thursday, May 7, 9:30 a.m. (on the Quad in front of OP)  The Leonardo bridge will be taken down so if you’ve been meaning to get by and see it, this week is your last chance!

Friday, May 8, 6:00 p.m. Visual Communications Senior Capstone Portfolio Exhibition:  closing reception.  Kirksville Arts Association.  The show will be up at the KAA May 7 – 9, 2015.

We hope to see you at many if not all of these great events!

We would also like to congratulate the following students who have received the following awards from Art Department faculty.  They will be honored at the Academic Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 8 at 5:00 p.m. in the SUB (Georgian Room).

Last day of classes and good luck with finals!

Those on campus will know that Friday, May 1 is the last day of classes at Truman.  Finals Week will be next week, with Reading Day falling–as is tradition–on Wednesday, May 6.  Those on campus will also know that it’s been a particularly beautiful spring.  Prof. Aaron Fine (University Art Gallery/Studio Art) sent this picture of painting students enjoying the weather.

Also for next week:  the Leonardo bridge will be taken down on the morning of Thursday, May 7 so if you’ve been meaning to come see it, next week is your chance!

This week in the Art Department!

It’s the last week of classes at Truman so there is lots going on in the Art Department!

ART 429 Historical Methods Mini-Conference:  junior Art History majors Duncan Holahan and Matt Treasure, and senior Art History minor Danielle Naeger, will present their historiographic research at a mini-conference which they have organized for Tuesday, April 28 from 9:00 – 10:20 a.m. in OP 2210.

BA/BFA Studio Exhibition:  in partial fulfillment of degree requirements, Hailey Gearo, Danielle Naeger, Colleen Ryan, and Jessica Zilch (BA in Art) will be exhibiting artwork as will Alex Eickhoff (BFA in Studio Art).  The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Art Gallery (OP 1114).  As always, this Gallery event is free and open to the public.

Strong Foundations exhibition:  continuing through this week in the Gallery is the Strong Foundations show; this features work selected by Art Department from produced in Art Studio Foundations courses (and generally as part of the Foundations Proficiency portfolio review).  This semester, work by Hannah Nicks, Sadie Pafford, Nicholas Phan, Joslyn Ross, Colleen Ryan, Taylor Schulz, and Yochi Tu appears in the show.

Clay People sale: students in the ceramics club, Clay People, will be holding a sale of their work on Thursday, April 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the Quad (rain location: OP main atrium).  Great chance to buy reasonably priced, hand made, sustainable, and beautiful gifts!

Student exhibition opens this week!

This week opens the exhibition of Senior Capstone work done for the BA degree in Art.  Please join us in the University Art Gallery (OP 1114) to see work by Melissa Aholt, Allison Behm, Molly Diecker, McKenzie Grabish, and Caroline Tiffin.

An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gallery.

This Week in the Art Department!

On Wednesday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Aidan Dodson (University of Bristol) will be giving a public lecture entitled “The Valley of the Kings” (OP 2210).  Dr. Dodson is an internationally recognized expert on ancient Egypt and his lecture is free and open to the public.
