Lots going on in this last week of classes!

All Art History majors are required–sometime during their time at Truman–to complete some sort of art historical experience outside of the classroom.  This might be an internship, study abroad, a workshop, or lots of other possibilities.  Students then share their experiences with the campus community;  on Monday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. in OP 2210 the Art History Society (the club for students interested in Art History) will be hosting a series of presentations by students who completed their experience in Summer 2011.  Please join us to learn more from Amy Hall, April Johnston, Allie Straussner, and Elmer Stunkel about internships at both the DUMBO Arts Center in Brooklyn, New York and at the St. Louis Art Museum (with Truman Art History alum Dr. Mike Murawski), and study exchange in the Czech Republic!

Everyone is also invited to the University Art Gallery on Tuesday, December 6th at 6:00 p.m. for the opening of the exhibition of work by students planning to graduate with a BA: Art or BFA:  Studio Art degree.  The exhibition will be up through Friday, December 9 and will feature work by Sarah Harford, Sierra McCown, Danielle Pahls, Amanda Rispoli, and Sammy Wheeler.  As always, the exhibition is free and open to the public, and (again, as always) refreshments will be served at the opening.  More information on Gallery events can be found at http://tsugallery.org.

Hope you can join us to support and congratulate these students!

Student docents in University Art Gallery

2011-02-11 09.16.09
First-year Art History major Emily Hagen works with visiting middle and high school students in "The Workshop and the World".  Emily also worked as a Curatorial Assistant for this exhibition.

This semester, as always, many Truman State University students have been active as volunteer docents in the University Art Gallery.  Many are members of Art History Society, but the Gallery also has docents from Departments across campus;  for example, a number of Communication Disorders majors and Disability Studies minors docented for the recent "4 Real 4 Faux" exhibition.  Anyone interested in being trained as a Gallery docent should contact Prof. Aaron Fine, Gallery Director, at afine@truman.edu;  in addition, anyone interested in arranging for a docent-led Gallery tour may also contact Prof. Fine.

Art Historians Outside the Classroom!

This evening, Tuesday, November 2, three senior Art History majors will present on their experiences last summer outside of the classroom.  Art History majors are all required, during their time at Truman, to engage in Art Historical activity outside the classroom:  a workshop, an internship, study abroad, or lots of other options.  In addition, they present that experience to the campus community as a whole in a symposium organized by the Art History Society.  This evening, Stephanie Barry, Jaime Chambers, and Michelle Kimberlin will talk about their respective internship or study abroad experiences in Kirksville, Texas, and St. Louis–5:30 p.m. in OP2210.  Hope to see you there!

Renaissance Art in St. Louis!

A group of students, mostly Art History majors and mostly from ART324 Renaissance Art and ART428 Topics in Art History:  Reading Michelangelo recently visited two exhibitions in St. Louis. Students went to the St. Louis Art Museum to see a wonderful exhibition entitled "The Mourners".  This show featured stunning alabaster sculptures originally made for the tomb of Jean sans Peur (John the Fearless), Duke of Burgundy who died in 1419;  these late Medieval/early Renaissance works were paired with an early twenty-first-century video installation by the American artist Bill Viola entitled Visitation.  In addition, at the Vatican Splendors show at the Missouri History Museum, students had the chance to see autograph documents by artists such as Michelangelo and Bernini as well as a sculpture probably by Michelangelo, as well as lots of other items from the Vatican collections in Rome.  In addition, students had the chance to meet with Truman alumni Dr. Mike Murawski (Director of School Services, St. Louis Art Museum) and Ms. Lisa Gilbert (Education Coordinator, Missouri History Museum) to discuss musuem work, education in the museum settings, and internships available through both organizations.

Art History Society First Meeting!

The first meeting of the Art History Society will be Tuesday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m. in OP2250.  AHS is the club for any Truman student (regardless of major) interested in Art History.  The club takes trips to see great art and to participate in national conferences, as well as holds fundraisers (including the very popular Art History Cupcakes sale!) and run the popular AHS Study Sessions to work with any student in any Art History course needing some extra support–as well as lots of other great activities!  Any questions?  Please contact AHS at ahstruman@gmail.com

See you there!

Last week, the Art History Society had a bake sale to raise funds (after the fact) for their trip to the College Art Association conference this past February in Chicago.  Customers could either buy premade cupcakes (see below) or could request a custom-decorated, art history-related cupcake.

Careful observers will notice in the selection below interpretations of (top row, left to right):  van Gogh's Starry Night, an Art History faculty member, and Jasper Johns' Target, and (bottom row) the Mona Lisa and Jeff Koons' Balloon Dog.

Art History Students Attend CAA in Chicago

DSCN0263

A group of Art History majors attended the recent College Art Association conference in Chicago.  CAA is the national conference and professional organization for those involved in teaching art, art history, and graphic design at the university level also includes others such as museum professionals, those involved in the art market, and so on (for more, see http://www.collegeart.org/).  Students worked as room monitors, attended sessions, and visited museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, where the picture above was taken.  Thanks to Valerie Lazalier for sharing this picture with the Department!

"The Things They Carried:  Mementos from Kirksville Vietnam War Veterans" opened last week at the Kirksville Arts Association Arts Center. Congratulations to the student curators:  Matt Carlson, Melinda Gross, Luke Icenogle, Michele Kaminski (alumna), Karin Li, Sam Lyons, Cecilia Muruato, and Valerie Lazalier.  This exhibition, organized and curated by Truman State University students (mostly Art History majors or minors, and mostly Art History Society members), focuses on the experiences of Kirksville vets and displays information about and items associated with those vets service overseas.  To prepare for the exhibition, the students interviewed six local veterans and those vets have generously and graciously loaned pictures, uniforms, and other items to the exhibition.  In addition, the show features some other items from other Kirksville residents as well as photographs from the National Archives in Washington D.C.

The exhibition will be on display in the Arts Center through Friday, February 26, 2010.  For directions and gallery hours, please visit:  http://www.kirksvillearts.com/newsite/

This show is part of the larger The Big Read project going on in Kirksville during February and March 2010.  Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Big Read focuses on increasing reading in communities across the country.  For the Kirksville Big Read, residents will be reading Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, which focuses on the Vietnam War.  For more information on The Big Read, to obtain a book, or participate in other related activities, please visit:  http://bigread.truman.edu or call (660)785.4383.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

Art History Majors to Present Out-of-Classroom Experiences

On Monday, October 26 at 5:30 p.m. in OP2210, four Art History majors will give presentations about their Out-of-Classroom experiences.  These experiences are part of the Art History major and students may choose to do anything that takes them out of the classroom and allows them to apply their art historical knowledge in new settings.  In the past, students have done internships, learned art-making techniques such as fresco, studied abroad, participated in archaeological digs, and so on.  The following students, who completed their Out-of-Classroom Experiences during Summer 2009, will present on Monday:

Ruby Jenkins, study abroad in Florence

Valerie Lazalier, study abroad in Rome

Samantha Lyons, study abroad in France

Cecilia Muruato, study abroad in Rome

The presentations will be followed by an informal reception including snacks and are organized by the Art History Society (the club for students interested in Art History).
