“New Works by Truman Faculty” Show to Close This Saturday

The University Art Gallery’s current show “New Works by Truman Faculty,” with artwork by Laura Bigger, Amanda Breitbach, Aaron Fine, and Francine Fox, has its last day on Saturday, October 8th.  If you are interested in seeing art from our new faculty or some of the works created by Aaron Fine on his sabbatical, you don’t have much time to take a look.

As a special treat, Laura Bigger will discuss one of her works on Thursday, October 6th, as part of the Art Department’s #forArt series.  At 4:45 pm every other Thursday in the University Gallery there is a presentation from a faculty member.  A 15 minute talk, between classes on  Thursday evening.  Come hear Professor Bigger talk about her own work in front of examples of it, as one of the highlights of this week in art.

Art History Class Visits World War I Museums

Generous  funding from a School of Arts & Letters Mini-Grant and from the Friends of the Gallery fund of the University Art Gallery helped students in ART 428 Topics in Art History:  Dada and World War I travel on Wednesday, September 28.  Students visited the Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood Home and State Historical Site in Laclede, MO, and the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, MO.  At both sites, students met with museum staff and visited these important museums and their collections;  since students are working on a Spring 2017 exhibition, to be held in the University Art Gallery, which focuses on creative responses to World War I, the trip benefited not only their studies this semester, but also the Gallery show in the spring.  Stay tuned for more on the students’ work in this class and on the show, entitled Arts Against the Great War.

New Faculty Member Francine Fox

            Truman State University has added several new faculty in the Art Department this fall.  Francine Fox is starting as an Assistant Professor of Foundations and she will be teaching Drawing, Art Studio Foundations I and II, and sections of Introduction to the Visual Arts focused on Drawing in the fall and on Watercolor in the spring.
            Before accepting her position at Truman, Fox taught a range of Fine Art courses at Western State Colorado University, Casper College, the Art Institute of York Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Millersville University, and the University of Delaware. She has been a member of the New Wilmington Art Association, The Lancaster County Art Association, Emerging Young Artists, The Casper Artists’ Guild, and the Rochester Contemporary Art Center.
            Fox is a nationally- and internationally-exhibiting artist whose work is represented by Kenise Barnes Fine Art in Larchmont, New York. She has exhibited at the Siena Art Institute in Siena, Italy, the Social Sciences Research Council in Brooklyn, NY, the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science, and Art in Scranton, PA, and the Werner Wildlife Museum in Casper, WY. Additionally, Fox has works in the collections of the Contemporary Painting Museum at Namık Kemal University in Tekirdağ, Turkey, the University Hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, and the 2016 Wyocity Public Art Project in downtown Casper, WY.
            Fox utilizes combinations of figures, gently anthropomorphized animal imagery, traditional and personal semiotic lexicons, and depictions of invisible forces through modified and invented charting symbols to examine the significance and aesthetics of gray areas between opposing ideas linked to identity and epistemology.

Alumna Publishes First Article

April Johnston (Art History 2014) works in St. Louis as a curator for a private art collector, and she sent us the following message this spring:

I wanted to share with you that I’ve had my first piece of art-writing published! I was invited by the editors of All the Art, St. Louis’s new visual arts quarterly, to contribute to their Art + Money issue. The piece is a short interview with my boss, John Horseman. It’s been a little over a year since he hired me and managing the collection continues to be extremely fun, rewarding, and educational! The entire issue can be read with this link; my piece is on page 12-13 of the print edition, and on page 15-16 in the digital edition.

Greek Sculpture Studies at Truman

In Dr. Sara Orel’s spring Greek and Roman class, students photographed themselves in poses taken from sculpture and vase paintings of the Archaic and Classical Periods (roughly 600 BCE to 330 BCE).  This gave them a chance to study the poses, objects, and relationships of the figures.  Here are some of the photos they submitted for the assignment:

News from Alumni

We are always happy to get news from alumni of our Art and Art History programs, some of whom are involved with Art careers and others who have really exciting careers in other fields.  Here are some of our latest updates from Art History majors:

From Bryna Campbell:

In May 2015, I graduated with my PhD in Art History & Archaeology from Washington University in St. Louis, with a dissertation titled “The Comic Grotesque: Troubling the Body Politic in American Graphic Satire from World War I to the Great Depression.” I also received a graduate certificate in American Culture Studies. Since graduating I have been teaching as an art history instructor at Portland State University in Portland, OR. I am also the co-creator and founding editor of The Art and Place Blog (theartandplaceblog.wordpress.com) and the co-creator of the creative writing project Un/Settled (un-settled.org), which focuses on themes related to rural diaspora.

Brian Dale (who wrote his senior thesis the same year as Bryna):

I work in financial services as an Asst. Vice President with Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis. I live with my family in Webster Groves, MO, and my involvement with art does not extend beyond drawing with my daughter and the odd trip to the museum.

Katherine Eusey:

My love of Islamic architecture led me to pursue an MA in Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. Although my thesis was on the topic of mosque architecture, real-world pressures (ya know, needing to eat and pay rent) ended up pushing me into the field of security and intel. After working for a year as an intelligence analyst at a large security and executive protection firm in Tel Aviv, I joined a small startup called Levantine Group (also Tel Aviv-based) as the Director of Partnerships. In that role, I work with diplomats, journalists, corporate security managers, and even a few university study abroad program directors who are based across the Middle East.

Students heading to Graduate School

Congratulations to the following Art majors who have been accepted to graduate school in their fields:

Emily Hagen, who has been accepted at Penn State University to study Art History,

Matt Treasure, who will study Egyptian Archaeology and Language at the American University in Cairo,

and Darrell Williams, who will be going to the University of Missouri to study for his MFA in Painting.

Student Art in the Library

In the spring semester, Danielle Yakle’s Sculpture, Fibers, and 3D classes joined forces to produce a set of sea creatures that hung in the library.

For about a month in late February and early March, jellyfish, whales, rays, and sharks prowled the atrium space. Thank you to the Art students who worked together to change the ambience of Pickler Memorial Library and the library authorities who were so welcoming to this public art project.
