Every year, the art department honors our strongest artists in foundational classes (observational drawing, figure drawing, and three-dimensional design) with a show in the Charlyn Gallery. Then, we choose three particularly successful students to award with scholarships. This year, congratulations goes to Julia Kidwell, Audrey Allison, and Natalie Gruber!

Truman State University Art History alumni Jasmine (Fry) Cloud and Ryan Gregg both presented new research at this year’s Sixteenth Century Studies conference in mid-October. The meeting marked the 50th anniversary of that interdisciplinary organization for scholars of the early modern or Renaissance period. Dr. Cloud, now Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Design at the University of Central Missouri gave her paper–“Early Modern Infrastructure: The Routes and Roads of the Roman Forum”–in a session entitled “The Built Environment of Rome”. Dr. Gregg, department chair of the Department of Art, Design, and Art History at Webster University in St. Louis, presented his research in a session on artistic identity; his paper carried the title “Francesco da Sangallo’s Beard: Artistic Identity in Portraits of Cinquecento Sculptors”. Congratulations to both!
Painting student Madilyn McClain spent three hours face painting at Woofstock on Saturday. Woofstock is a charity even that supports a spay and neuter assistance program for cats and dogs. Thanks for helping in the community, Madi!

The first bronze pour at Truman happened last week! Led by Professor Yakle, students in advanced sculpture melted bronze and poured it into their molds. Keep posted to see the results!
Sculpture student Wesley Scafe demonstrates the fully functional ribbon cutting scissors he constructed for Truman State University. They were used for the first time at the 2019 Homecoming celebration and ribbon cutting for the new plaza and fountain. Thank you Wesley!
Chloe Carter, of Robinson Green City, won Best of Show during the Art on the Spot event at Truman State University. In addition, she was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $400!
Vendors and community members descended upon Kirksville’s historic square for the Red Barn Festival on Saturday, September 21st. Jeannie Scott Zumwalt is a Truman grad and won the 3D first prize and the founders award.
Truman State University’s Fibers Club won the student prize.
Art Professor Laura Bigger has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Banana Factory Arts Center in Bethlehem, PA entitled Celestial Bodies. It will be on view from late August through late October, 2019. The exhibition features prints from a few different bodies of work that are visually connected through their integration of celestial bodies such as clouds and space.
