China Study Abroad!

Prof. Ping Xu (Visual Communications) and other Truman faculty led a study abroad trip to China this summer. They arrived in Beijing on May 22. During the first five days in Beijing, they visited the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Olympic Park, and the National Opera House. They then travelled to Xi'an where they spent another five days. Students there visited the City Wall, the Shaanxi Historical Museum, and the Terra Cotta Museum during the time in Xi'an.
The team arrived at Shanghai University on June 1st. In addition to taking Chinese language classes, two Truman Art majors in Vis Comm interned at TBWA Shanghai. In the team's spare time, they traveled to Shanghai's neighbor cities–Suzhou and Hangzhou. In addition, they visited the Shanghai Museum, the offices of Coca Cola, and saw the sights in Shanghai.

Art Alumna in Africa!

Art Department alumna Jaime Chambers (Art History) has been working for the past year as a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa (Malawi). She has been doing remarkable work there, and most recently has been focusing on raising funds for a science lab for the school at which she teaches.

Jaime kindly sent us these photographs, including the one above of her speaking at the home of the United States Ambassador in Malawi. The pictures below include images of residents in the village where Jaime lives making bricks for the science lab project.

Gallery Opening Tonight!

We hope to see everyone tonight at the opening for this year's first University Art Gallery exhibition! The show features work by four Truman State University Art Department faculty members:

Matt Derezinski (Visual Communcations), who works in both graphic design as well as photography–he has won numerous awards for his photo work, many of which have been noted on the Department blog.

Lily Lee (Studio Art) who just joined the faculty this month; this will be the first chance to see Prof. Lee's work in Kirksville.

Wynne Wilbur (Ceramics), who is just back from sabbatical leave; the show will include work made during her month-long trip to China last fall.

Rusty Nelson (Visual Communications) who has remained very active as an illustrator and graphic designer while also serving (tirelessly!) as Chair of the Art Department. The show includes some illustrations made during a recent trip to Italy.

It's a great opportunity to meet the artists and see some wonderful artwork. Hope to see you there!

The opening will be at 6:00 p.m. in the University Art Gallery which is located in Ophelia Parrish Rm. 1114. As always, Gallery events are free and open to the public.

Prof. Fine publication!

Prof. Aaron Fine (Studio and Gallery Director) had an essay entitled "Newton's Black Box" included in the first issue of 8 1/2 x 11, a periodical of images and art-related writing published by Plug Projects in Kansas City.

Art Up Close

As many on campus know, the University is in the process of conducting a restoration and renovation project on the iconic Kirk Memorial building on campus. Part of that project involved replacing the original cupola with one that would be more weather-resistent and durable. This gave many a chance to see the original cupola up close, as above, as well as to watch the new cupola being installed (below). Thanks to Campus Photographer Tim Barcus for making these images available! Art students to present at TruScholars Symposium

Mamie Cox in front of the National Museum of the American Indian. As part of her research on James McNeill Whistler, Mamie traveled to the Smithsonian Instition in Washington D.C. to see paintings and prints by the American artist, as well as to work with archival documents.

Two Art majors, Mamie Cox (Art History) and Emma Roeder (Studio) were selected through a very competitive process to participate in the TruScholars Undergraduate Research Program during Summer 2013. Both will be presenting the results of research and creative work at the TruScholars Symposium on Saturday, August 24th in the Georgian Room, Student Union Building (SUB) on Truman's campus.

First Day of Classes!

Classes for the 2013-14 academic year begin on Thursday, August 22nd for students and faculty across campus. We are so happy to have everyone back and look forward to a great year ahead. Stay tuned to the blog to keep up on events this coming academic year in the Art Department and beyond.

Truman Week going strong!

Truman Week classes in the Art Department this week have been going strong as first-year Art students settle into life in college. We are excited that two Truman Week sections of our new Art Studio Foundations I course are being offered. Yesterday, Prof. Priya Kambli (Photo) took her class to the Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery in Kirksville which contains graves of Civil War soldiers, Andrew T. Still (founder of osteopathy), and other notable Kirksville citizens. The students drew and explored, and Prof. Kambli shared these great photos with us!

Welcome, First-Year Students!

The Art Department sends a special welcome to all first-year Art majors! Freshmen arrived on campus this past Saturday, August 17th to move into the dorms and start settling into life at Truman. They also start Truman Week classes, some of which will be in the Art Department. We look forward to welcoming them all at Majors Day on Tuesday of this week and in their full schedule of classes starting on Thursday.
