Art Up Close

Photo cupola
As many on campus know, the University is in the process of conducting a restoration and renovation  project on the iconic Kirk Memorial building on campus.  Part of that project involved replacing the original cupola with one that would be more weather-resistent and durable.  This gave many a chance to see the original cupola up close, as above, as well as to watch the new cupola being installed (below).  Thanks to Campus Photographer Tim Barcus for making these images available!  For more information, see this biref article (which includes a link to more photos), this article from The Index (Truman's student newspaper), and this web page for more information on the building and the man for whom it was named.

Truman Week going strong!

IMG_6347

Truman Week classes in the Art Department this week have been going strong as first-year Art students settle into life in college.  We are excited that two Truman Week sections of our new Art Studio Foundations I course are being offered.  Yesterday, Prof. Priya Kambli (Photo) took her class to the Forest-Llewellyn Cemetery in Kirksville which contains graves of Civil War soldiers, Andrew T. Still (founder of osteopathy), and other notable Kirksville citizens.  The students drew and explored, and Prof. Kambli shared these great photos with us!

Stuart Henn–Art History Alum Update

Dr. Sara Orel (Art History) put out a call on Facebook recently for information on what Art History alumni were up to. We were overwhelmed not only by the wonderful response but also all the great things that our alums are doing. So, this summer the blog will feature updates on all that great stuff!  The most recent post appears below:

Stuart writes:

Stuart Henn (BA, Art History, 2002)

"Professionally:

I accepted admission to Northern Illinois University's Masters of Arts in Art History program in the Fall of 2012 and will begin my second year and thesis work this fall.  I received a graduate teaching assistantship and lead discussion sections of Introduction to the Visual Arts as well as Art History Survey II.  My thesis work will focus on the dynamics of the New Bauhaus and the Institute of Design in Chicago and the mid-century designers present in Chicago at the time.

I worked at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy for a time after graduating until accepting a position with the Elmhurst Art Museum as Coordinator of External Relations.  While there I was able to author the didactic panels for Sandra Jorgensen:  Fitting In, an exhibition of recent acquisitions of work by Chicago Imagist, Sandra Jorgenen.  I served as the Interim Educator at the Geneva History Center presenting adult and children' educational programming on local history to visitors and area school children.  I produced a highly successful audio tour for the traveling exhibition, Rural America which presented Regionalist lithographic prints by Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry.

Personally:

I met my wife, Michelle, and in April of 2011 we were married and make our home in Geneva, Illinois outside Chicago."

Congratulations, Stuart!

Leslie Contarini at Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, during Save Venice's Summertime Gala 2012 fundraising event.

Leslie writes:

"After Truman I completed my MA in Art History at the University of Warwick in the UK. I moved to Venice, Italy in 2006 and have been working at Save Venice Inc. ever since. Save Venice Inc. is an American non-profit organization that is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the art and architecture of Venice.

As program coordinator at Save Venice, I follow everything from our educational programs including our international internship program, to our publications and website, and our community and donor outreach efforts ranging from lectures and tours to major fundraising events. My favorite part of my job is helping to coordinate the restoration efforts of incredible works of art including masterpieces by Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese.

While at Truman in addition to art history I also studied political science and Italian language and culture, all invaluable subjects that I use in my job each day."

Congratulations, Leslie!
