Prof. Kambli sent this post with exciting news about her photographs being exhibited in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston:
Photo Forum 2010 voted to include Priya Kambli's photographs as part of its 2010 acquisition for the Museum of Fine Art in Houston collection. The work will remain on exhibition through January.
Photo Forum is interested in photography as a fine art. The group has a dual purpose: to increase knowledge about the collecting, connoisseurship, and history of photography and to support the museum's growing permanent collection of contemporary photography.
Founded in 1988, Photo Forum sponsors six programs a year and also holds bonus meetings. At the final meeting each year, Photo Forum members vote on acquiring contemporary photographs with their membership dues.
Congratulations to Art Department alumna Jasmine (Fry) Cloud (BA, Art History, 2005) who has just won one of only two Travel Grants from the Italian Art Society, a national academic organization devoted to the study of Italian art from all time periods. Prof. Fry, who is currently a doctoral candidate in Art History at Temple University, received the award to present her paper “Reviving the Heart (of the City): The Renovations of the Churches on the Roman Forum” in the Italian Art Society-sponsored session entitled “Rome Revitalized: A Reassessment". This session will be part of the the Renaissance Society of America annual conference to be held this March 2011 in Montreal Canada. Congratulations, Jasmine!

Priya Kambli writes: My photographs visually express the notion of transience and split cultural identity caused by the act of migration. I have been viewing this issue through the lens of my own personal history and cultural journey. My move from India to the United States in 1993 left me feeling that I do not belong fully to either culture – leaving me unable to anchor myself in any particular cultural framework.
This disconnection from both cultures has changed me. I feel I have a hybrid identity, a patching together of two cultures within one person. Photography has helped me bridge the gap between my two cultures while coming to terms with this dual nature. My digital photographs reflect the tension inherent in this dual nature, by juxtaposing fragmented images, family snapshots, and carefully staged imagery. – Priya Kambli

Congratulations to Art History minor Luke Icenogle who just sent us notice that an abridged version of his Truman State University-funded TruScholars research project, "Gender Roles in Post-9/11 Media," will be published in the Fall 2010 Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) journal Metamorphosis. TruScholars receive $3000 to work on a research project, with a faculty mentor, during the summer term. Current Truman students intersted in applying for Summer 2011 should check the TruScholars website.

Some members of the student club, the Art History Society, recently went on a walking tour of Kirksville architecture with Dr. Cole Woodcox (Chair of the Department of English at Truman), a specialist in architectural history and local and state architecture. They are shown here in front of the Masonic Temple on Harrison St. in Kirksville.

Congratulations to Art alumna Allison Meadows (BA Art History 2008, shown above exploring the east coast). Allison and her family recently let us know that she was just hired as a Curatorial Assistant at Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Keen readers of the Art Department blog will remember that last year Allison graduated with an MA in Material Anthrpology and Museum Ethnography from Oxford Univeristy. Wonderful news!
This evening, Tuesday, November 2, three senior Art History majors will present on their experiences last summer outside of the classroom. Art History majors are all required, during their time at Truman, to engage in Art Historical activity outside the classroom: a workshop, an internship, study abroad, or lots of other options. In addition, they present that experience to the campus community as a whole in a symposium organized by the Art History Society. This evening, Stephanie Barry, Jaime Chambers, and Michelle Kimberlin will talk about their respective internship or study abroad experiences in Kirksville, Texas, and St. Louis–5:30 p.m. in OP2210.
