Study Abroad and Internships in China!

This past summer, Art Department faculty member Prof. Ping Xu (Visual Communication), together with Prof. Julie Minn (Classical and Modern Languages, Chinese), took a group of c. eighteen Truman State University students to China for seven weeks;  seven of the students were Visual Communications majors.  Students were in both Beijing and Shanghai.

While in Shanghai, the Vis Comm majors conducted a five-week internship at the top-ten ranked advertising agency, TBWA.

Students also visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Pingyao, a 3000-year old ancient town in Shanxi province in addition to many other sites;  they also saw the famous ancient terra cotta warriors of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China.

If you haven't seen the Faculty Show in the University Art Gallery or have been meaning to see it one last time, this week is your last chance!  The show, which features work by Profs. John Bohac (Painting), Julia Karll (Fibers), and Ping Xu (Visual Communications) will close Friday afternoon (October 7).  Stay tuned here for information about the next Gallery exhibitions…opening reception will be Tuesday, October 18th!  As always, more information also available at the Art Gallery blog.

Art History Graduate News!

Congratulations to Valerie Lazalier (Art History, 2011) who just let us know that she has been accepted into the masters program in the History of Art at Indiana University.  This fall, Valerie began the masters program in Library and Information Science, also at Indiana University, so she will be working towards degrees in both Library and Information Science and the History of Art.

In addition, Valerie was selected to work as a part-time registrar's assistant in the Registrar's Office of the Indiana University Art Museum.  She sent this picture of her in front of the museum building which was designed by the renowned contemporary architect I.M. Pei (who also designed additions for the National Gallery in Washington D.C. and the Louvre in Paris).

Prof. Matthew Derezinski recent exhibitions

Prof. Matt Derezinski (Visual Communications) had work accepted in the Chelsea Biannial Art Exhibition 2011 in New York, New York.

His work will also be printed in Best of Photography 2011 and Artist Portfolio Magazine, Winter 2011.

And finally, he won a Photography Award at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts 100th Annual Exhibition and was the Director's Choice for the Viridian Artists' First International Juried Photography Exhibition in New York City.

British Archaeologist to Speak on Campus

Dr. Julie R. Anderson, Assistant Keeper of Ancient Sudan and Egyptian Nubia at The British Museum in London, one of the leading museums in the world, will give a public lecture titled "Black Pharaohs and Porridge: A Nubian temple on the middle Nile reveals its secrets.”  The talk will be on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:00 p.m. in OP 2210.  The talk and related events have been arranged by Dr. Sara Orel (Professor of Art/Art History, orel@truman.edu).

The image above shows a sculpture of the head of Aspelta, king of Kush (northern Sudan, c. 600-580 BCE) which was found during Dr. Anderson's excavations in the the Sudan.

Recent Grad & Alumni News!

Classes are now in full swing and it's been a beautiful week in Kirksville!

Joyce Wong (Studio Art, 2011) is attending graduate school at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine (for a MFA in Fibers).

Dr. Ryan Gregg (Art History, 1999) has just been awareded a tenure-track job in Art History at Webster University in St. Louis.

Anna Youngyeun (Studio Art, 2011) is a graduate student in Fibers at University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.

Valerie Lazalier (Art History, 2011) is beginning graduate degrees in both Information and Library Science and Art History at Indiana University.

Jen Teter (Studio Art, 2002) is Director of Education at the Quincy Art Center, and also teaches Ceramics at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois.

Julie (Pincus) Glossenger (Studio Art, 2009) is teaching at Chesterfield Elementary School in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Rosemary Melton (Studio Art, 2010) is a Kindergarten-5th Grade Art teacher at both Lewis & Clark Elementary School and Gibson Elementary School in the Riverview Gardens School District.

Jasmine (Fry) Cloud (Art History, 2002), doctoral candidate in the History of Art at Temple University, has just moved to Italy for the next two years where she will be a Kress Foundation Institutional Fellow at the Biblioteca Hertziana in Rome.

Brianne Fulton (Studio Art, 2002) teaches at Art at Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri.

Katherine Eusey (Art History, 2006) is pursuing a Masters Degree in Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University in Israel.

Collaborative Research and Creative Service Learning Project

This semester saw the final completion and implementation of a service learning project which involved majors in all the areas in the Art Department.  Students in ART 329 Historical Methods, working in consultation with the Missouri State Museum and the Department of Natural Resources, developed, researched, wrote, designed, and implemented a website that provides detailed information about the Thomas Hart Benton-created murals in the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City.  The students created the website to serve a large range of audiences, from state legislators, to teachers and school groups, to anyone with internet access and an interest in this Missouri artist or these works.

Towne Center Exhibition

Senior Art majors Valerie Lazalier and Michelle Kimberlin have curated an exhibit in the Ruth Towne Center for the Center's "What Is This?" series.  The display features three pairs of tinted eyeglasses drawn from Special Collections in Pickler Memorial Library.  Developing the exhibition related directly to both students' interests:  Valerie will matriculate this fall into the Information and Library Science masters degree program at Indiana University and has a special interest in archives, special collections, and museums;  she has been doing an internship this semester in Special Collections at Pickler Memorial Library on campus.  For her Senior Thesis, Michelle worked on Claude Monet's experiences late in life with cataracts for which at times he wore special corrective glasses.
