Interdisciplinary Collaboration in the Gallery!

Blog readers will know that the Hunter/Gatherer exhibition, currently up in the University Art Gallery, has a significant public-outreach component.  As part of that, the Gallery is engaged in lots of interdisciplinary collaboration!

  • Monday, October 27, 4:30 p.m.:  the Gallery and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will co-host the Interdisciplinary Faculty Caucus in the Gallery.
  • Wednesday, November 12, the Gallery will host a reception immediately following the opening night performance of the Department of Theatre’s production of The Drowsy Chaperone.  We hope to see you at the play and the reception!
  • On Friday, November 14 the Gallery, together with the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will host a reception for new faculty and their guests immediately prior to the Lyceum Concert which features bluegrass legend Rhonda Vincent.

New Music in the Gallery!

This week the Department of Music is hosting the New Horizons Music Festival (Monday, October 20 – Saturday, October 25).  As part of that, the University Art Gallery is presenting experimental music inspired by the theme of the current gallery exhibition, Hunter/Gatherer.  The music can be heard in the Side Gallery of the University Art Gallery (OP 1114).

Gallery Talk with Larry Gawel

Larry Gawel, a Nebraska artist whose tintypes are on display in the University Art Gallery’s “Hunter/Gatherer” exhibition will be in the gallery this Friday, October 24 at 2:00 pm to discuss his work. Mr. Gawel’s images document his encounters with the landscape and the plant and animal life he hunts, gathers, and consumes as food. The tintype process he uses is an antique method of capturing photographic images that cuts him off from the latest digital methods and creates hauntingly beautiful images of food as the connection between ourselves and our environment. This event, like all others associated with this exhibition, is free and open to the public.

During his visit, Mr. Gawel will also be working with students, faculty, and classes in the Art Department.

In addition to being an active studio artist, Gawel also teaches photography at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska.  His beautiful tintype photographs are made using a traditional photography process.

Faculty at Council on Undergraduate Research Conference

Three Art Department faculty members serve as Councilors for the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).  CUR’s mission is  “…to support and promote high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship”.  Dr. Sara Orel (Art History) was elected as Chair of the Arts and Humanities Division and also serves on the Executive Board.  This year, Prof. Wynne Wilbur (Studio) and Dr. Julia DeLancey (Art History) were elected to serve as Councilors in the Arts and Humanities Division.  In those roles, all three faculty members also attended the annual meeting this past summer in Washington D.C.  Truman State University faculty are very active in CUR:  one hundred twenty four (124) are members of CUR and many serve in leadership positions such as Division Chair or as heads of task forces such as Internationalization.  Stay tuned for more information about Art Department presentations at CUR as well!

Hunter/Gatherer to open on Tuesday!

On Monday, October 13 the new exhibition in the University Art Gallery will open.  Here’s what Gallery Director Prof. Aaron Fine (Studio) had to say about the show:

Truman State University Art Gallery’s latest exhibition “Hunter/Gatherer: Food and Conservation” will open with a reception on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Art Gallery (OP 1114).  This exhibition is part of a larger gallery program known as “Food and Conservation in the Heartland” and utilizes contemporary art to engage with themes pertaining to the food supply of rural Missouri residents.

“Hunter/Gatherer” seeks to transcend political divisions in order to provoke discussions around the issues of where our food comes from, its production, the ways it connects us to our environment, and what accounts for food insecurity. Some of the themes being touched on include hunger, food safety, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and hunting.

“Hunter/Gatherer” is one of the most uniquely engaging exhibitions the gallery has shown to date. This exhibit will feature extensive educational programming and offer free transportation and guided tours for schools, churches, and other groups.

A collection box will be available in the University Art Gallery for exhibit visitors to make canned good or monetary donations that will benefit the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.

In addition, there will be a public forum, “Perspectives on Food” on Tuesday, November 4 at 6:00 pm in the University Art Gallery. This event is open to all members of the community in order to discuss the topics that inspired this exhibition.

An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, October 14 at 6:00pm in the University Art Gallery located in Ophelia Parrish 1114 on the campus of Truman State University. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, October 14 and continues through Friday, November 14, 2014.

The Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 7:00pm, Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and Saturday, noon to 4:30pm. The gallery is closed during campus holidays. For more information, or to schedule a group tour, please contact Aaron Fine at 660-785-5386 or afine@truman.edu

Getty scientist and Truman alumna to present about art conservation

Dr. Catherine Schmidt Patterson (Conservation Institute, The Getty) will return to campus to give two talks this week.

Catherine Schmidt Patterson (Truman State University 2002;  BS in Chemistry with an Art History minor) is an Associate Scientist at the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) in Los Angeles, where she is a member of the GCI’s Collections Research Laboratory.  Her primary areas of research are the use of non- or minimally-invasive techniques such as Raman microspectroscoy and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to study works of art, the development of new analytical methodologies, and technology transfer for the benefit of cultural heritage science.  Prior to joining the GCI as a member of staff in 2009, she was selected for the GCI’s prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science (2007-2009). She received her Ph.D. at Northwestern University, where her research focused on the fundamental physical chemistry governing the interaction of small organic molecules with catalytic surfaces (Thesis Title: Interaction of Indoor Air Pollutants with Titanium Dioxide Catalyst Coatings Studied by Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry).

Dr. Schmidt Patterson’s visit is sponsored by the Department of Chemistry.  All talks are free and open to the public.  We hope to see you there!

Faculty Exhibition Opens!

The Faculty Art Exhibition will open the University Art Gallery’s offerings for the academic year.  Each year, the Faculty Art Exhibition features the artwork of selected members of the Art Department faculty.  This year, the Gallery will showcase the work of Prof. John Bohac (Studio:  Painting, also an Art Department alumnus), Prof. Jim Jereb (Studio:  Printmaking), and Prof. Ping Xu (Visual Communications).

The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the University Art Gallery (Ophelia Parrish Fine Arts Center, Rm. 1114 on Truman’s campus).  As always, Gallery events are free and open to the public–and the receptions always include refreshments as well.  We hope to see you there!

Alumna artwork featured on Time magazine cover

thurs_cover Blog readers will remember the exciting news that Truman Art Department alumna Lori Nix won, last May, a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.  She and fellow artist Kathleen Gerber were commissioned by Time to create the cover for the Thursday, June 26, 2014 issue!
