Truman students, Bonnie Kempker, Nathan Gorman and Matt Bowden, were recognized with the Outstanding Future Professional of the Year Award at the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MOAHPERD) fall convention banquet, saturday, November 14, 2015 at the Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, MO. They qualified for this award by having an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher, professional involvement and leadership evidence. Jennifer Hurst was invited to speak to students from Davis County High School in Bloomfield, IA about the athletic training profession on November 5th. This was part of Davis County’s Biannual Career Fair for the high school.
Senior Exercise Science students, Hannah Runez and Nicole Moss, presented their original research with Jennifer Hurst at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology in October. Their project explored the influence of both visual and auditory stimuli of water on changes in mood and enjoyment of moderate physical activity.
The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri received the “Community Partner of the Year” award and was recognized at the sixth annual Community Partner Appreciation Luncheon, Oct. 27.
The Community Partner of the Year award is given by the SERVE Center to an outstanding community member or agency that has worked closely with the University to promote public scholarship among Truman students.
The Environmental Health Class, taught by Dr. Janice Clark, completed street cleaning for their stretch of High Street. Thank you Dr. Clark and students!

The Lee Advising Award pays tribute to excellent advisers and demonstrates how important academic advising is at Truman. Recipients of the Lee Advising Award are nominated by students and colleagues and are ultimately selected by a committee.
Hurst, an associate professor of exercise science, began teaching at Truman in 2005. She teaches classes in sport psychology, sociology of sport, athletic training and research methods. She received her bachelor’s degree from Carthage College and her first master’s degree from the University of Illinois—Chicago. Hurst earned her second master’s degree and doctorate of education from West Virginia University. She serves as the chair of the Disability Studies Committee.

Maggie DeDecker, May ’15 Health Science Alumna, is beginning her
Doctorate program in Occupational Therapy at Creighton University. She participated in the white coat ceremony on August 22nd. Maggie said, “I’m one week into the program and it’s already completely amazing and extremely challenging. They don’t waste any time getting started here! Truman has prepared me well though.”
The St. Louis Business Journal recently published its annual “30 Under 30” list, recognizing a group of up-and-coming young professionals in the St. Louis area, and we are proud to announce that Tara Osseck is on the list. Tara is a manager – physician relations and business development at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Graduation with Honors is not the highest recognition that Dr. David Peterson (’95) will receive from the United States Sports Academy. The U.S. Navy Commander is also being awarded the Academy’s 2015 Alumnus of the Year Award for his outstanding performance as a student and a professional.
Commander Peterson received his doctorate in Sport Management with an emphasis in Health and Fitness from the Academy in July of 2014. His dedication to his educational journey and commitment to his career have been exemplary.
He currently serves as the Executive Officer, Physical Education Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In this role, he acts as the senior military instructor and Reporting Senior for all active duty military personnel within the department. The Naval Academy’s Physical Education department is one of the broadest of its kind in the nation, responsible for the physical mission development for each Midshipmen within the Brigade. This development is accomplished through structured and rigorous instruction in the areas of swimming, personal defense, recreational sports, and administration of the semi-annual Physical Readiness Test. Midshipmen must meet specified physical education requirements during each of their four years at the Naval Academy in order to graduate.
He also serves as the Director, Human Performance Laboratory at the Naval Academy in which he provides physiological testing and fitness counseling to various Division I varsity and club sport athletes as well as general Midshipmen struggling to meet Naval Academy physical mission requirements.
Most recently, he was requested by name to present at the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) annual Tactical Strength and Conditioning Conference (TSAC) that took place in Orlando, Fla., in April of 2015. He also presented at the NSCA Delaware State Clinic in February of 2015.
Commander Peterson is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with Distinction through the NSCA and has published several manuscripts on physical fitness testing within the military for the NSCA Strength and Conditioning Journal and Military Medicine.
“None of these accomplishments would have been possible without my Ed.D. from the Academy,” Commander Peterson said.
His Dissertation Chair, Dr. Stephen Butler, the Dean of Academic Affairs, says the Academy’s program was a perfect fit for someone like Commander Peterson.
“He was an outstanding student,” said Dr. Butler. “When you look at his career in the United States Navy, you see that he is exactly the type of student that the doctoral program at the Academy was designed for.”
With over 17 years of active duty experience, Commander Peterson has provided aeromedical support to a vast number of Navy and Marine Corps aviators and aircrewmen. As a Naval Aerospace and Operational Physiologist, he has provided aeromedical training and support on a variety of subjects including hypoxia, spatial disorientation, and fatigue countermeasures.
Commander Peterson currently resides in Annapolis, Md. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Truman State University in 1995 and his master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1997.

The Missouri Athletics Trainers’ Association (MoATA) recently presented Michelle Boyd, Head Athletic Trainer and Former Director of the Athletic Training program at Truman, with the MoATA Outstanding Service Award at the association’s Honors and Awards luncheon in Cape Girardeau. Read more
