{"id":186,"date":"2011-01-13T22:17:39","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T22:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/mathcs\/?p=186"},"modified":"2011-01-13T22:17:39","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T22:17:39","slug":"math-colloquium-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/mathcs\/2011\/01\/13\/math-colloquium-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Math Colloquium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our first math colloquium of the semester will be <strong>Wednesday, January 19,<\/strong> from <strong>3:30-4:30<\/strong>.\u00a0 Chad Williamson, a Truman Student, will be speaking on <em>Understanding how fronts propagate through flowing fluids \u2013 the search  for a new model. <\/em>As usual,<strong> refreshments will be provided<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>ABSTRACT<\/p>\n<p>Advection-reaction-diffusions systems \u2013 systems consisting of a fluid<br \/>\nflow in which a front (perhaps a chemical reaction) is propagating<br \/>\nthrough a flow \u2013 are common in nature and range from cellular-level<br \/>\nprocesses to plankton blooms in the oceans. Reaction dynamics without<br \/>\na flow present (reaction-diffusion systems) are well understood, as<br \/>\nare the dynamics of laminar, nonreactive fluid flows (chaotic mixing;<br \/>\nadvection-diffusion systems). Extensions of the established theory for<br \/>\nreaction-diffusion systems (the so-called<br \/>\nFisher\u2013Kolmogorov\u2013Petrowskii\u2013Piscounov Theory), which attempt to<br \/>\naccount for the addition of a flow, show major disagreements with<br \/>\nrecent experimental observations. Roads the quest for a new theory may<br \/>\ntake will be discussed, with an emphasis on the role of coherent<br \/>\nstructures in flows (such as vortices) and tools adapted from chaotic<br \/>\nmixing (manifolds and lobes). The discussion will highlight both<br \/>\ncomputational and experimental research conducted in the Physics<br \/>\nDepartment at Bucknell University under Tom Solomon during the summer<br \/>\nof 2010, the computational component of which is ongoing here at<br \/>\nTruman.
