Before 1950, membership was limited to descendants of Massachusetts Bay or Plymouth colonists.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mandell has also been elected a Fellow of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masshist.org\/\">Massachusetts Historical Society<\/a>, \u201can independent research library that collects, preserves, makes accessible, and communicates manuscripts and other materials that promote the study of the history of Massachusetts and the nation.\u201d Founded in 1791, it is the first such organization in the United States.
