{"id":396,"date":"2016-09-06T10:03:49","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T15:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/history\/?p=396"},"modified":"2016-09-06T10:03:49","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T15:03:49","slug":"global-issues-colloquium-sponsors-presentations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/history\/2016\/09\/06\/global-issues-colloquium-sponsors-presentations\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Issues Colloquium Sponsors Presentations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This fall, the Global Issues Colloquium will feature five events to help raise campus awareness of current international issues.<\/p>\n<p>The first event of the colloquium, \u201cTransnational Latin American Revolutionary Solidarity with the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party in the 1950s and Beyond,\u201d will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in Magruder Hall 2001. This presentation will use the stories of Carlos Padilla and Rosa Meneses, two members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party (PRNP), to examine three issues related to Puerto Rico and Latin America in the 1950s. The issues this presentation addresses largely occurred prior to the 1959 Cuban revolution, but they provide insight into the revolutionary currents that existed throughout Latin America in the pivotal decade leading up to it.<\/p>\n<p>Other presentations scheduled for this semester include: \u201cThe Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras,\u201d at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Student Union Building Georgian Room C; \u201cInternational Development: Is there hope?\u201d at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in Magruder Hall 2001; \u201cNatural Treasures in Peril: Challenges and Successes in Conservation from the Himalayas,\u201d at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in Magruder Hall 2001; and \u201cYouth and African Development &#8211; Harnessing the Demographic Dividend\u201d at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 in Magruder Hall 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The colloquium was first developed more than a dozen years ago as an informal attempt to broaden conversations about current issues affecting the world. More recently, it has found a niche within the structure of the International Studies Program.
