{"id":337,"date":"2016-01-28T15:53:19","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T21:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/history\/?p=337"},"modified":"2016-01-28T15:53:19","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T21:53:19","slug":"the-african-american-experience-in-missouri-series-inaugural-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/history\/2016\/01\/28\/the-african-american-experience-in-missouri-series-inaugural-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"The African American Experience in Missouri Series Inaugural Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The inaugural lecture of <i>The<\/i> <i>African American Experience in Missouri<\/i> series featuring Diane Mutti Burke, associate professor of history at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, will be held at <b>7 p.m. on February 3<\/b> in Jesse Auditorium of Jesse Hall on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In her presentation, <i>Contesting Slavery: Enslaved Missourians\u2019 Enduring Struggle for Self-Determination,<\/i> Mutti Burke will examine the lives of African Americans who were enslaved in mid-Missouri. Her talk is the first in an 18-month series planned for 2016 and 2017. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to start the evening at 6 p.m. with a light reception. A book signing for Mutti Burke\u2019s 2010 release <i>On Slavery\u2019s Border: Missouri\u2019s Small-Slaveholding Households<\/i> (University of Georgia Press) will immediately follow the talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The lecture series, which is a collaboration between the State Historical Society of Missouri\u2019s Center for Missouri Studies and MU\u2019s Division of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity, will explore the history of African Americans in Missouri from pre-statehood to the present. MU history professor Keona K.
