{"id":18767,"date":"2017-10-03T09:30:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T09:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/hes\/?p=18767"},"modified":"2017-09-25T19:33:04","modified_gmt":"2017-09-25T19:33:04","slug":"truman-alumna-tells-about-her-great-hes-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/hes\/2017\/10\/03\/truman-alumna-tells-about-her-great-hes-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Truman Alumna Tells About her Great HES Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I graduated my goal was to find a role where I could engage in community collaboration, promote healthy living practices, and influence health-related policies.\u00a0 My journey in public health began as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) near Kansas City, Missouri<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18768 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/hes\/files\/2017\/09\/sept-25-17-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/hes\/files\/2017\/09\/sept-25-17-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/hes\/files\/2017\/09\/sept-25-17.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>where I developed and implemented a variety of community-based health promotion programs.\u00a0 While working full-time as a community health educator, I pursued my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree online from University of Missouri-Columbia.\u00a0 I also obtained a Global Public Health Certificate, which allowed me to complete a month-long MPH internship abroad in Ghana, Africa.\u00a0 In August 2015, I was selected to participate in the Greater Kansas City Healthcare Foundation\u2019s yearlong Healthy Communities Leadership Academy with other professionals to improve community collaboration, civic leadership, and system\/policy change. I am thrilled to have transitioned into the role of project\u00a0manager at the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health in 2016.\u00a0 Working alongside a team of medical and public health professionals, I am contributing to tobacco cessation research.\u00a0 In spring 2017, I advanced to a master level health education specialist (MCHES).\u00a0 I am proud that my work is directly influencing positive change in public health so I can continue improving health outcomes in my community.
