The bonds that come from hours spent together at practice and playing alongside one another in games proved to be beneficial for members of the women’s club basketball team when they encountered a potentially tragic accident.

In November, while en route to a tournament in Milwaukee, Wis., five members of the team witnessed an automobile accident on Highway 63, just north of the Missouri-Iowa border. A deer jumped in front of an oncoming vehicle, shattering the windshield and causing the car to swerve before the driver was able to bring it to a stop on the side of the road.

“We all saw the deer hit the car and it instantly looked like a situation that could have caused massive injuries to the passengers in the car,” Rachel Meinert said. “It was just our human nature to stop and make sure that the people in the car were OK. We never even considered not stopping.”

While the club basketball team typically caravans to tournaments, this was the only car making the trip that witnessed the accident. As luck would have it, four of the five team members had first aid and/or CPR training.

Truman State University and A.T. Still University leaders met Wednesday afternoon to sign an articulation agreement that would allow students to finish undergraduate and medical school within seven years.

In December 2015, students from ES 224 and HLTH 349 Research Methods courses presented their research at a poster presentation from Drs. Brian Snyder, Jerry Mayhew, and Alicia Wodika.

Richard Neboh, Brianna Smith, Bailey O’Drobinak, and Jordan Allen presented their research on academic support and student athletes.

 

The Health and Exercise Science Department recently purchased a new High-Speed Treadmill for the Human Performance Lab. The treadmill has a top speed of 26 miles per hour. This can be helpful for high speed training to develop running speed. It is also useful for determining maximum oxygen intake testing using the 40° incline.

The treadmill can be used for rehabilitation since it has an unloading system capable of reducing the user’s body weight, allowing them to walk or run at lighter body weight. Safety is always a main priority in both rehabilitation and training, therefore it comes equipped with a harness system to prevent participants from falling.

On November 10^th, Environmental Buddies and the HLTH 362 course presented an activity about recycling to Mrs. Lechner’s second grade class at Kirksville Primary. The Environmental Buddies group was organized by Sydney Smith, Lauren Houk, Miley Vu, and Aviance Webb (pictured below).

In HLTH 362: Environmental Health, students presented their ‘second-life’ projects. All objects were made from second-hand items to create a new, final product including shelves, a cat post/bed, wooden chest, flower vases, a clock, a lamp, games, and accessories.

On October 28^th, students from HLTH 362 presented their ‘second-life’ projects on Sustainability Day. Sustainability Day was co-hosted with the President’s Sustainability Action Committee, Student Government, and the Bike Coop.

On October 22^nd, HLTH 362 spent half the day at Possibility Alliance in LaPlata to learn more about sustainable living. Possibility Alliance is a sanctuary run by Ethan and Sarah Hughes as well as countless volunteers. Students’ eyes were open to the idea of living in the present and learning how to live a more sustainable life, while also discussing key environmental issues.

Athletic Training students Brock Wright and Aaron Patterson competed in the NATA #BetterTogether photo contest in November to win a trip to the 2016 NATA National Convention in Baltimore. This contest was open to all certified athletic trainers and athletic training students. Their theme was ‘Brock and Aaron support their school and athletes in any way possible! Like tape and prewrap!’ Out of 200 entries, the Truman Athletic Training students won the competition gaining the most votes! They have won free airfare, registration and housing to the national convention in Baltimore in June 2016!

Truman students, Bonnie Kempker, Nathan Gorman and Matt Bowden, were recognized with the Outstanding Future Professional of the Year Award at the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MOAHPERD) fall convention banquet, saturday, November 14, 2015 at the Lodge of Four Seasons, Lake Ozark, MO. They qualified for this award by having an overall GPA of 3.25 or higher, professional involvement and leadership evidence.  They are pictured below receiving their plaques from MOAHPERD President Mr. John Poznar.

Jennifer Hurst was invited to speak to students from Davis County High School in Bloomfield, IA about the athletic training profession on November 5th. This was part of Davis County’s Biannual Career Fair for the high school.

Senior Exercise Science students, Hannah Runez and Nicole Moss, presented their original research with Jennifer Hurst at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology in October. Their project explored the influence of both visual and auditory stimuli of water on changes in mood and enjoyment of moderate physical activity.
