Since then, she has moved to Columbia, MO with her wonderful husband, Nick.\u00a0 She works at the University of Missouri in the College of Education and serves as an advisor for students seeking to earn their teacher certifications, both in-state and out-of-state. While she and her husband are currently trying to start a family, they are very content living\u00a0 with their two cats, Daisy and Violet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2014 with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Studies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wix.com\/TheCommClub\/NCASC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Club<\/a> on campus, serving as President for one year. I was also the Treasurer for <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a>, the Communication Honors Society. A large portion of my time was dedicated to activities in <a href=\"http:\/\/truman.trisigma.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma Sigma Sigma<\/a>, a social sorority on campus. If so, where? Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait? Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I attended Truman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/graduate-studies\/masters-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masters of Arts in Education<\/a> program immediately after my BA in Communication. I hadn\u2019t considered a plan B if teaching wasn\u2019t what I wanted to do! As life would have it, I found myself feeling unhappy in the front of the classroom (I\u2019m an introvert) and I began searching for a new field. Still passionate about education, I wanted to stay within this realm while still using my Communication background. I found my current position, working as the Certification Officer for Mizzou\u2019s College of Education, and I absolutely love it!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_985\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-985\" class=\"wp-image-985\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-5-e1547763560713.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-5-e1547763560713.jpg 468w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-5-e1547763560713-182x300.jpg 182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maggie and her (now) husband, Nick, at Forest Lake in Kirksville (2013).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the Certification Officer for Mizzou\u2019s College of Education, I work with students daily to assist them with requirements for teacher certification, both in-state and out-of-state.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My job heavily relies on knowledge gained from both of my degrees, as I need to be an expert on the constantly changing education policies and communicate these policies to students in a clear, concise manner.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=375&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Communication<\/a>. I often find myself quoting lessons learned from our readings in this class. As a college student, health wasn\u2019t a particularly important concern of mine. Now, the information from the class would be extremely beneficial \u2013 I wish I could take it again today! We read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.ca\/books\/Brain-on-Fire\/Susannah-Cahalan\/9781982109486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Brain on Fire<\/em><\/a> for this class, which is now a recent Netflix movie!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was very proud of the fact that I graduated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academicapparel.com\/caps\/cum-laude.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cum Laude<\/a> and with <a href=\"http:\/\/honors.truman.edu\/department\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Departmental Honors<\/a>. As a liberal arts institution, Truman encourages students to cross over information from general education studies to a multitude of specialties. To current students: take advantage of this fact! Don\u2019t just take classes that you hear are \u201ceasy A\u2019s.\u201d Instead, find subject areas that captivate your interests (especially your <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?catoid=14&amp;navoid=684#Interconnecting_Perspectives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JINS<\/a> course!).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_986\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-986\" class=\"wp-image-986\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-1-e1547763702816.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-1-e1547763702816.jpg 583w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/Maggie-1-e1547763702816-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maggie (right) and fellow COMM student and Tri-Sigma Sarah (2013).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They should get involved! I&#8217;m sure everyone said this to me as a student, but I didn\u2019t really <em>grasp <\/em>what they meant. You don\u2019t get this many opportunities after college, so take advantage of them now! If you crave knowledge and self-fulfillment, there is likely a <a href=\"http:\/\/csi.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">club on campus<\/a> in which you can find your niche. If for nothing else, consider the fact that interviewers are more impressed by extracurricular involvement than high GPAs or test scores.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be organized in your communications! Always document and keep records of your work to refer to later. Be content with asking for help from peers or superiors \u2013 it is much better to get something right than to do it all by yourself and make mistakes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I miss campus immensely! I loved the beauty of the architecture and proximity of all buildings to one another.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">COMMUNICATION<\/span><del><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">S<\/span><\/del><\/strong> (No \u201cS!\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To current students: find campus resources! If you have a problem, there is likely a dedicated person on campus to help you find answers!
