Two years later, I still have a COMM degree, my fianc\u00e9 upgraded to husband status, and I work in the events department at Hubbard Radio St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated May 2016 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journalism<\/a> concentration and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/interdisciplinary-studies-major\/film-studies-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">film studies<\/a> minor.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I worked in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truman Media Network<\/a>\u00a0(TMN) as an online editor for <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detours<\/a>, made a three-year run with <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/category\/ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a> beginning as a music programming assistant and ending as general manager, and wrote for the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN website<\/a> with another COMM alum, Katey Stoetzel! (Rest in peace, Netflix Roulette.)<\/p>\n<p>P.S. Katey and I have a podcast now \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/split-screened-podcast\/id1214650553?mt=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Split Screened Podcast<\/a> on iTunes! We still discuss\/review Netflix shows, but now we\u2019ve thrown feature films into the mix. If you ever want to listen to lame jokes and wild speculations about popular shows and movies, now you know where to find us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t go to grad school \u2013 I was too excited to move into the work force and start a career. It\u2019s not out of the question for the future, though!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_867\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-867\" class=\"wp-image-867\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/11\/Five-e1543596441653.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/11\/Five-e1543596441653.jpg 717w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/11\/Five-e1543596441653-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sara&#8217;s street team days: the Maroon 5 concert with 106.5 the Arch (2017).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I started working part time at <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.hubbardradio.com\/markets\/st-louis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hubbard Radio St. Louis<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/newcountry923.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Country 92.3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.101sports.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">101 ESPN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1065thearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">106.5 The Arch<\/a>, and most recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kshe95.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KSHE 95<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1057thepoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">105.7 The Point<\/a>) as a street teamer a month after graduation. I ran all over the St. Louis area playing games, running radio remotes, giving away prizes, and talking to listeners.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m still at <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.hubbardradio.com\/markets\/st-louis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hubbard<\/a>! I work as an event coordinator for our Integrated Marketing\/Events department, where I manage a team of brand ambassadors who represent different brands onsite and assist with putting together our station events.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I apply pretty much everything I learned in the COMM department to my current job \u2013 video production, photography, publication design\u2026 the list could go on and on. I spent so much time in the dark room trying to develop film, and to be totally honest I just wasn\u2019t good at it. I have stacks upon stacks of really bad prints. I\u2019m<em> very<\/em> grateful for digital photography.<\/p>\n<p>In all honesty, I love the fact that I\u2019m able to say that I (even for a very short period of time) knew how to develop film. That class also taught me that it\u2019s okay to not be great at something \u2013 I gave it my best shot and still had fun anyway. Plus, I loved seeing the creativity my classmates displayed with their photos!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.truman.edu:8000\/ktrm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-244 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1.png 3000w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-768x589.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-1024x785.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a>Managing <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/category\/ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a>, hands down. I was terrified to take on such a big role in the beginning, but spending so much time immersed in the field really helped me gain tons of important skills like leadership, management, conflict resolution, etc. I also loved watching people find a passion for radio \u2013 I\u2019m really happy to have played even a small role in that.<\/p>\n<p>I also wrote a paper about Parks and Recreation \u2026 I\u2019d be lying if I said I wasn\u2019t super happy to watch Netflix for an assignment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman is great for hands-on experience. Actually working in media at <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN<\/a> instead of just reading about it made all the difference \u2013 I gained a bunch of real-life experience in my field, built a pretty solid portfolio for job applications, and found a career path I enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-228 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/tmnlogoP1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"115\" \/><\/a>Get involved with the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truman Media Network<\/a>! It\u2019s a great place to figure out what you like and don\u2019t like, and there\u2019s really no limit to what you can do. I did a little bit of work in almost every department, and it\u2019s made me that much more well-rounded today.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re aiming for a career in radio, working at a station part time is a great stepping stone. As weird as that sounds, having dedicated time to learn is worth more than it seems. I do a lot of learning on-the-go now, which has its own perks, but being able to sit down in a classroom and basically get a \u201ctrial run\u201d of career stuff is invaluable.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can I use a Parks and Rec quote? I did write a whole paper on it and all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually tests scare me, but this is an oral exam. And if there\u2019s one thing I know, is\u2026my fantastic\u2026it\u2019s talk.\u201d\u00a0 &#8211;Andy Dwyer<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would love to teach a class about event production \u2013 crafting sponsorship ideas, building a promotional strategy, basically just spending a semester putting an event together and then actually running it at the end.<\/p>\n<p>I would let someone else name it because I\u2019m awful at naming things.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s really important to remember that everyone is on their own journey in life. Just because you may not be graduating with a full time job (I didn\u2019t) or you\u2019re not getting straight As every semester (I also didn\u2019t) doesn\u2019t mean that your time won\u2019t come \u2013 it just means that your path is still showing itself.
