He helps develop artificial intelligence technologies for the pharmaceutical industry. In 2015, Andrew was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmm-online.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medical Marketing and Media\u2019s<\/a> Young Marketer of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew\u2019s hobbies include keeping up to date on pop culture, cheering on Kansas City sports teams, and playing chess. In 2016, Andrew earned the opportunity to play chess against the world chess champion, Grandmaster <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MagnusCarlsen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magnus Carlsen<\/a>. While he didn\u2019t prove victorious, he earned a moral victory by outlasting Bill Gates\u2019 performance against Magnus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a> and a minor in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/political-science-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Political Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of my co-curriculars were COMM-related.\u00a0 I was a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\">Truman Forensic Union<\/a>, Truman\u2019s speech and debate team. I was also President of <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pi Kappa Delta<\/a> (the honor society for debate) and VP of <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a> (the national honor society for Communication).\u00a0 My jobs included working as a TA for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/eclark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Clark<\/a> \u2013 the COMM Department Chair at the time (now the Dean), a TA for Dr. Scholten, and working in the COMM Department Office.\u00a0 You could say I lived in Barnett Hall.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_785\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-785\" class=\"wp-image-785\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/BarnettHallSept2015-2a-e1539970977188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/BarnettHallSept2015-2a-e1539970977188.jpg 4000w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/BarnettHallSept2015-2a-e1539970977188-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/BarnettHallSept2015-2a-e1539970977188-768x309.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/BarnettHallSept2015-2a-e1539970977188-1024x412.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barnett Hall &#8211; Great place for classes, less great for sleeping.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After graduation, I became a Social Media Coordinator for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intouchsol.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intouch Solutions<\/a>, a marketing agency in Kansas City that specializes in healthcare\/pharma. I led the social media technology and support efforts on the social media insights and analytics team at Intouch. My team ensured the organization used the most secure, efficient and relevant methods of executing social strategy while remaining FDA-compliant.<\/p>\n<p>My responsibilities included creating content, managing social listening analysts, and being the social liaison for our development department.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m still at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intouchsol.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Intouch<\/a>, but my roles have changed over the last six years. I\u2019m now Manager of Innovation, where I help develop artificial intelligence technologies for the healthcare industry. I also lead the organization\u2019s ideation\/crowdsourcing initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>I love what I do, because I get to help clients understand how to bring fun, innovative platforms to life to benefit patients, caregivers and healthcare providers. There weren\u2019t any classes about social media marketing, AI, or blockchain while I was in college, so I\u2019ve had to learn a lot of that along the way. The analytical thinking skills and learning techniques that Truman imparted helped me develop the skills needed to grow into my current role.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I disliked any class, but I\u2019m especially grateful for <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=251&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Media Writing<\/a> since it teaches story structure and the elements of proper storytelling. I use those fundamentals every day, even on the AI team.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My greatest accomplishment at Truman was winning state and national championships with the <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speech and debate team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As most speech kids know, it takes a lot of effort every week to be successful, from writing and practicing speeches to traveling long hours and competing. I really enjoyed visiting colleges across the country to speak about topics I was passionate about, such as funding for local libraries and preventing discrimination the workplace. COMM students have <a href=\"http:\/\/adpr.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ad &amp; PR Club<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radio\/TV\/newspaper<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speech and debate<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">honors organizations<\/a> to become a part of. I\u2019d encourage everyone to join at least one of those!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check out one of the organizations mentioned above. These groups give students the opportunity to apply the skills they\u2019re learned and test their interests before they join the industry full-time.<\/p>\n<p>Also, students should absolutely get a bike. Barnett can be a long walk!\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em> &#8211; It&#8217;s not <em>THAT<\/em> long of a walk.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do as many internships as you can. I found my job at the <a href=\"http:\/\/career.truman.edu\/career-grad-school-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truman Career Fair<\/a> as an internship my junior year. That gave me the experience needed in social media marketing to get hired full-time upon graduation.<\/p>\n<p>If someone would like to enter the innovation field, I\u2019d recommend lots of self-taught lessons about tech subjects that they are passionate about. The field is constantly changing, so while some Truman classes may touch briefly on these topics, experience only comes from exercising that passion in the \u201cjob world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dorm life. I don\u2019t miss the small rooms or communal bathrooms, but the people I met my freshman year are still some of my closest friends today. Super late nights and pre-paid meals are less frequent post-college.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I usually charge for this kind of creativity\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-663\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/nerd-smile-e1535142231607.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em> &#8211; Rats!
