Her Twitter bio says she is \u201ca pile of half eaten hot wings who wished very hard to be a real girl\u201d which is the most accurate description of her in existence. She currently works as a political editor for the website <a href=\"https:\/\/thetylt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Tylt<\/a> and hosts a monthly comedy show.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2013 after double majoring in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication<\/a> with a journalism concentration and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/english-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English<\/a> with a creative writing concentration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a facilitator for <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=250&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mass Communication<\/a>, worked in the <a href=\"http:\/\/writingcenter.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Writing Center<\/a>, reported for News36 (now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/News36KTRMTV\/featured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN-TV<\/a>) and in my senior year took over as news director, was the PR chair for <a href=\"http:\/\/asg.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alpha Sigma Gamma<\/a> and also organized two of the sorority\u2019s philanthropy weeks.<a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/apply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-756 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/TMNTV-Banner.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/TMNTV-Banner.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/TMNTV-Banner-300x76.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did not. I have been able to get jobs in my chosen fields without having to go to grad school and I have no plans to go back unless I find a position I will be unqualified for without further education. No sense in accruing more debt if I don\u2019t need to!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I worked as the communications manager for a small educational non-profit in St. Louis for three years after graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetylt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-757 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/dBJK_-FD_400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/dBJK_-FD_400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/dBJK_-FD_400x400-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/dBJK_-FD_400x400-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/a>What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m now working as the political editor at a website called <a href=\"https:\/\/thetylt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Tylt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It made me a much cleaner and more straightforward writer as well as gave me a chance to get a letter grade for doing a stand-up set (I still think I deserved an A\u2026.BUT I\u2019M NOT BITTER).\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em> &#8211; the letter grade was for more than just a stand-up set.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_753\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"wp-image-753\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/20663861_160995387799599_4695171417956559122_n-e1539270647157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/20663861_160995387799599_4695171417956559122_n-e1539270647157.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/20663861_160995387799599_4695171417956559122_n-e1539270647157-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/20663861_160995387799599_4695171417956559122_n-e1539270647157-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cait (right) and a friend before one of those comedy things she&#8217;s so proud of (2017).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I liked most of my communication classes, but broadcast journalism (now <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=355&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COMM 355: Digital Video Production<\/a>) basically gave me an ulcer. I learned so many skills that are still useful\u2014audio and video editing, interviewing, lighting and how to set up lav mics\u2014that I still use to this day. Just in the last week I\u2019ve done on-camera hosting, edited together video clips for story and pitched a new video feature, all of which I learned in broadcast journalism. Also, Avid\u2019s not as bad as we all made it seem.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-228 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/tmnlogoP1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"125\" \/><\/span><\/strong>In 2012, all of <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truman\u2019s media outlets<\/a> coordinated to produce live election night coverage of the results. It was a huge undertaking, specifically because we were usually only live for little more than 20 minutes once a week. It was exhausting and stressful and I think several chunks of my hair fell out, but we did it! And just to reiterate that what you\u2019re doing at Truman is going to still be relevant\u2014I\u2019m starting to work with my coworkers on what kind of live coverage we\u2019re going to do on the site on election night 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s small enough for you to have relationships with your professors and classmates but big enough that you are constantly being pushed and challenged by your peers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How close everything is\u2014although I still maintain that time and space expand on that walk from Centennial Hall to Barnett Hall.\u00a0 Dr. Self \u2014 you can put in all the editor\u2019s notes you want but it won\u2019t make it any less true.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_755\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-755\" class=\"wp-image-755\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/42104364_10212112682274397_6782936765607968768_n-e1539271037889.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/42104364_10212112682274397_6782936765607968768_n-e1539271037889.jpg 921w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/42104364_10212112682274397_6782936765607968768_n-e1539271037889-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/10\/42104364_10212112682274397_6782936765607968768_n-e1539271037889-768x760.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A still promoting Cait&#8217;s comedy (2017). Did you know Cait did comedy?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Try everything! You\u2019ve got a safety net below you, the community at Truman is crazy supportive and you\u2019re never going to receive this kind of free criticism again. Like I said earlier, I tried stand-up for the first time (AND ONLY GOT A &#8216;B&#8217; BUT I DO STAND-UP ALL THE TIME NOW AND PEOPLE LAUGH A LOT SO I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN A), I planned events, I hosted shows, I presented at conferences, I ran for offices in organizations, I lost some, I won some. I spent my New Years somehow both freezing cold and also very sweaty in Pizza Ranches in Iowa reporting on the Iowa Caucuses. But I\u2019ve never learned so much from so many people who genuinely cared about my future. So try everything.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>START PITCHING STORIES RIGHT NOW. PITCH EVERYWHERE.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be a journalist, you\u2019re going to have to freelance at least a little bit. Better to start pitching stories while you\u2019re in college and aren\u2019t in need of the cash. Use your professors to learn how to craft pitches, bounce ideas off them, work on getting better. If you start pitching now you\u2019ll have clips to get you in the door and the thick skin you need when you (inevitably, sorry) get rejected a million times.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;COMM: Ya Get Outta It What You Put Into It&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Practically, I would want to teach a class called \u201cPitch, Please!\u201d about how to craft the best pitches for freelance stories. Just for fun though I\u2019d want to teach a class on horror movies called \u201cFear Factor\u201d because I could talk about horror movies non-stop for the rest of my life.
