I\u2019m a social media analyst at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangirl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Girl<\/a>. I live in Madison, WI, with my fiance, Jordan, and our two cats. When I\u2019m not working or busy planning our wedding (October 2019!), you can find me at the gym doing a cycling or Barre class, reading, re-watching \u201cMad Men\u201d or hosting friends in our 1929 house. Home was O\u2019Fallon, MO and since graduating, I\u2019ve lived in north-central Indiana and northern Wisconsin (Go Pack go!) before landing in Madison, just a stone\u2019s throw from the University of Wisconsin campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2014 with a double major in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication<\/a> (Journalism) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/english-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">English<\/a> (Literary Criticism).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_645\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-645\" class=\"wp-image-645\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_JBA-e1535052056620.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_JBA-e1535052056620.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_JBA-e1535052056620-257x300.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Preceptor Danielle at JBA (2013).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I dabbled in a few different things, and I regret not doing so before my junior year. I was a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/sigmataudelta.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma Tau Delta<\/a> for English, and was involved with <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/index-print-edition\/index-newspaper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Index<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/follow-ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/src.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Research Conference<\/a>. I was a staff reporter at The Index before joining on as an assistant news editor and loved every moment&#8230;even the late nights and a few tears while learning InDesign. I also had the pleasure of spending part of a summer with <a href=\"http:\/\/jba.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joseph Baldwin Academy<\/a> as a preceptor for Professor Krause\u2019s reporting and design class, which was an absolute blast.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where? Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t go to grad school, but don\u2019t think the thought hasn\u2019t crossed my mind a few times.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am very grateful that I had my first job lined up about two months before graduation, so my transition from college to work was pretty immediate. I joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elkharttruth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Elkhart Truth<\/a>, a newspaper that at the time was family-owned, as a copy editor and layout designer. That quickly evolved to a digital producer\/copy-editor\/breaking news reporter\/all the things.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elkharttruth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-657 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/download.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/download.png 600w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/download-300x39.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a social media analyst on the marketing team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangirl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Girl<\/a>&#8230;you know, the dolls! Anything you see on AG\u2019s social media has crossed my desk at a point. I work with such a talented team who develops and shoots our content, and I am responsible for creating an editorial calendar, scheduling posts and of course monitoring\/measuring our performance and growth. How hasn\u2019t it helped, really?<\/p>\n<p>Having a liberal arts background has made me so empowered to try a little bit of everything or think a little differently when solving any number of problems. It\u2019s made me really confident in larger groups and collaborating with others, as well as understanding perspectives. That to me is more valuable than being an expert about a subject. If you can\u2019t work well with others or share your idea in a meaningful way, what\u2019s really the point?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Am I a total cliche if I say it was a math class?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_660\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-660\" class=\"wp-image-660\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Current1-e1535140334528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Current1-e1535140334528.jpg 372w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Current1-e1535140334528-127x300.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Danielle braving the frozen tundra that is Green Bay, WI (2018).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m not really what you would call a math person (ironically, since a good portion of my job includes stats) and I put off taking <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=STAT&amp;filter%5B29%5D=190&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Statistics<\/a> until my senior year. I have never worked harder to really understand the material and prep for class and exams, and that\u2019s entirely to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/jguffey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Guffey\u2019s<\/a> credit. I quickly got the \u201cUgh, when am I ever going to need this info?\u201d line out of my vocabulary with his class, because the principles of statistics were so fascinating and he gave such real world applications of them. I truly would not feel empowered in my role as an analyst without this class. If you are able to get a seat in his class, do it and don\u2019t think twice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to be a Total Truman Student (TTS) and say my greatest accomplishment was getting a 4.0 the one semester I was able to.<\/p>\n<p>I remember having a really tough English class that semester and putting in many late nights in the library writing papers and studying with a classmate. I worked so hard for that specific class and getting a 4.0 during a semester with a full course load was just the cherry on top of the many late nights and long hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman is a great place to grow in whatever you\u2019re interested in and grow as a person. <a href=\"https:\/\/visitkirksville.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirksville<\/a> itself is free of a lot of the distractions of a larger college town, and the campus is such a tight-knit community. I never felt like a number or a head in the classroom. Professors were vested in students\u2019 success and pursuits and as a student, you\u2019re really able to carve out your own niche there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_646\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-646\" class=\"wp-image-646\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Truman1-e1535052247438.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Truman1-e1535052247438.jpg 643w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/08\/DW_Truman1-e1535052247438-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Danielle met Hoda Kotb at a student journalism conference while attending Truman (2013).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What would you say a COMM student should absolutely do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely get involved with an extracurriculars! It\u2019s so important to learn outside of the classroom setting and that\u2019s what really pushed me the most and taught me a lot about balance, time management and what I truly love to do (and just as important&#8230;maybe what I don\u2019t love to do and what\u2019s not for me. And that\u2019s OK).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GET AN INTERNSHIP.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously. I had one internship the summer before my senior year and that opened so many doors for me. Like I said above, you\u2019ll learn a lot about what you\u2019re good at and like to do&#8230;and maybe things you don\u2019t love so much. If you put in the work and the universe is aligned, it might just turn into a job.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being so close to all of my friends in one spot! I live in a big college town now (Madison, WI) and I always feel so nostalgic when I see students around. I miss feeling so carefree and having that built in social circle. My friends and I are kind of scattered across the Midwest now, and I so miss the days when we could meet up between class or have a good weekend venting session over some junk food. You\u2019re all in it together.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruman COMM: Communication, NOT Communication<u>s<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Editor&#8217;s note: This is an inside joke in the department. Feel free to visit campus and we&#8217;ll be happy to explain.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Critically reading or interpreting a book, film, etc., was my favorite &#8212; I actually looked forward to writing long papers about it.<\/p>\n<p>If I could come back and teach a class, it\u2019d be a COMM class about female portrayals in the media through history. It\u2019s more important than ever that female voices and minority voices are heard and, in a time that the media is under constant attack and scrutiny, I\u2019d be fascinated to look at it closer from a feminist lens.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/static1.squarespace-e1512598907526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What you give in COMM or at Truman is what you\u2019ll get. You\u2019re there to get an education, but you\u2019re also there to grow during a formative time in your life&#8230;find time and balance for both. Is Kirksville small? Of course, yes. Can Truman be a little quirky at times? Yes.
