He left Truman State for the University of Missouri, and in 2016, he graduated with a Masters degree in magazine writing. He\u2019s covered cities and schools for newspapers, written about tech for a business journal, and today focuses on <em>D CEO<\/em>\u2019s daily healthcare coverage. He has published stories on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riverfronttimes.com\/stlouis\/in-missouri-elderly-killers-often-get-away-with-murder\/Content?oid=3083674\">elderly killers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/longreads.com\/2017\/11\/20\/the-third-life-of-richard-miles\/\">compensation for exonerees<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmagazine.com\/publications\/d-magazine\/2018\/april\/dallas-neurosurgery-deep-brain-stimulation\/\">brain procedure<\/a> once tagged as \u201cthe most futuristic medical treatment ever imagined.\u201d He\u2019ll be turning 30 this year\u2014in lieu of flowers, please <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SDShinneman\">follow him<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2011 with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wrote and edited in various capacities at <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The<\/em> <em>Index<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Detours<\/em><\/a>, including spending my senior year as <em>Detours<\/em>\u2019 managing editor. I also did a couple of internships: one at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kq2.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>KQ2 <\/em><\/a>in my hometown St. Joseph, MO, and the other at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwherald.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Northwest Herald<\/em><\/a> in the suburbs of Chicago. I\u2019d been out of college for close to three years and already watched several of my newspaper reporter colleagues leave for the *ahem* greener pastures of the PR world. I still loved journalism, but couldn\u2019t envision getting where I wanted to go on the trajectory I was on. So, I made the decision to reinvest in myself and to seek a graduate degree tailored to the magazine world. I also wanted those <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mizzoumafia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mizzou Mafia<\/a> contacts.<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing about that: When I got my first job out of grad school, down here in Dallas and at a company of about 20 employees, none of them were Mizzou grads. <strong>Three<\/strong> of them were Truman State grads (<em>editor&#8217;s note: Woot! Woot!<\/em>). That\u2019s not to say I would\u2019ve gotten the job prior to my grad school experience\u2014I wouldn\u2019t have\u2014but I don\u2019t underestimate the role played by my Bulldog roots.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I took an unpaid internship at a travel magazine in Orlando; got the offer, if you can call it that, on my first day back home, and after spending a night in my childhood room took off the next day. After that, I moved to a tiny newspaper in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Portland,+IN+47371\/@38.4834258,-87.0939796,7.25z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x88157c2d02aba9a3:0xd2a70b2feedbb8ad!8m2!3d40.4344895!4d-84.9777455?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portland, IN<\/a>\u2014people who live in Indiana don\u2019t even know that Portland, IN exists\u2014before something eventually opened up at the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwherald.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northwest Herald<\/a>.<\/em> It was an adventure, but that\u2019s how it should be starting out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a senior editor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmagazine.com\/publications\/d-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>D CEO<\/em><\/a>, a business magazine in Dallas. Truman is where I learned to do journalism, both inside the classroom and within the student media center. The liberal arts side has been great, although a little less tangible\u2014but anyone who writes for a living understands the importance of a broad base of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=442&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Publication Design<\/a> was a drag at first. I think that was already changing by the end of the semester, but either way, I was definitely grateful that I had those skills when I got out into the working world and was asked to put them to use. At publications the size I started out at, reporters are also designers, photographers, editors, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say it was putting together two magazines start-to-finish as the managing editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Detours<\/em><\/a>\u2014working with all the staffers and under the guidance of our super talented Editor Stephanie Hall. Putting together a magazine is a long friggin\u2019 process, and those marathon weekend copy editing sessions could just about break you. I\u2019m really proud of the two finished products we delivered and I learned a ton about what it takes to make a magazine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-480\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/Detours-Logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/Detours-Logo.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/Detours-Logo-300x83.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The students around you are generally well-adjusted and have their heads screwed on straight, and your professors are passionate and down-to-earth. There\u2019s a lot to be said for all the face time you have access to with profs at Truman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For journalism students\u2014work in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/student-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student media<\/a>. There\u2019s no way to learn how to be a journalist except to just start doing it, and there\u2019s no way to convince future employers that you know how to be a journalist except to show them clips and\/or impressive lines on your resume that prove you\u2019ve already started.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_482\" style=\"width: 559px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-482\" class=\"wp-image-482\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/TMN-News-Room-e1526501692124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/TMN-News-Room-e1526501692124.jpg 725w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/05\/TMN-News-Room-e1526501692124-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Truman Media Network (TMN) Media Center (2016).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Seriously. Do it. Take a C in your religious theory class if you have to prioritize it that way. Just make sure you leave school with tons of great media experience and clips.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See above, for starters. I\u2019d also encourage people to keep learning and expanding their skill set\u2014a great resource that I lucked into during grad school is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ire.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Investigative Reporters and Editors<\/a> and its sister organization, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ire.org\/nicar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Institute of Computer Assisted Reporting<\/a>. They will almost certainly respond and be happy to discuss how they dug out that interesting anecdote you\u2019re wondering about, how they got their hands on those documents that propped up the story, or why they made the writing decisions they made. Those acts end up having the effect of networking\u2014you\u2019ll impress these impressive people with your genuine interest and enthusiasm\u2014but that\u2019s just a nice bonus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pancakecitykirksville.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pancake City<\/a>, obviously.<\/p>\n<p>Also, just being within a one-mile radius of just about all my favorite people.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finger lickin\u2019 good. Is that one taken?\u00a0 (<em>editor&#8217;s note: Our lawyers have confirmed that, yes, that one is taken<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d want to teach a class on investigative reporting or writing nonfiction narrative. And I\u2019d love to do either.
