Being involved was the best part of Truman State. I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.truman.edu:8000\/ktrm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM-FM<\/a> radio show, I was a football and basketball <a href=\"http:\/\/cheerleading.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cheerleader<\/a> all 4 years, a tour guide in the admissions office as well as a tele-counselor. During my junior and senior years I served on the <a href=\"http:\/\/homecoming.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homecoming Committee<\/a>, and I wrote several publications for <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detours Magazine<\/a>. I was a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/tls.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tau Lambda Sigma<\/a> service sorority all 4 years, and an SA (student advisor) in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/student-life\/housing\/campus-housing-options\/dobson-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dobson Hall<\/a> during my sophomore year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_401\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-401\" class=\"wp-image-401\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/RachTSU2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/RachTSU2.jpg 852w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/RachTSU2-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/RachTSU2-768x443.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel, Spike, and Coach Dan Davis (baseball) in 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was accepted into <a href=\"https:\/\/kansascity.teachforamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teach For America-Kansas City<\/a> prior to graduation and immediately entered my training for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachforamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TFA Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where? Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait? Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did attend grad school through Teach For America. It was immediately after I graduated at Truman due to the nature of the program. I now have a Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri- St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three years later, I am still in the classroom. I am writing my own entrepreneurship program for kindergarten through 8th grade. I think that my liberal arts education has opened a lot of doors for me through my TFA experience, too. I feel really well-rounded and able to attain different types of careers and jobs, regardless of my \u201cconcentration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was most frustrated by the requirement of taking 4 semesters of Spanish through my bachelor of arts degree. It was so hard. I didn\u2019t have a strong foundation for foreign language, nor did I make the time it takes to truly learn a language. That being said&#8211; I learned a lot about dedication and grinding out when things are out of your comfort zone and interests.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_400\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-400\" class=\"wp-image-400\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/Rach.Spike_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/Rach.Spike_.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/04\/Rach.Spike_-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel (note the knee brace) and Spike &#8211; Bulldog Strong (2015)!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019d say that my biggest accomplishment at Truman was my final semester. I had blown my knee at a cheerleading competition at Baker University and had to make BIG lifestyle changes all while finishing out my last semester at Truman. It took so much strength, positivity, and concentration to power through. From &#8220;crutching&#8221; to-and-from campus, sometimes three times per day, to continuing campus tours and enjoying my social life before graduation. I am stronger and better for it now!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman has hundreds of <a href=\"http:\/\/csi.truman.edu\/studentorgs\/student-organizations-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student organizations<\/a> to get involved in.\u00a0 Also, the Truman\u00a0 culture encourages you to create relationships with your professors and classmates. You will leave well-rounded and prepared to engage with the world in a meaningful way, regardless of what you do after Truman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should absolutely do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.truman.edu:8000\/ktrm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-244 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1.png 3000w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-768x589.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/KTRM0317-1-1024x785.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a>HAVE A <a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.truman.edu:8000\/ktrm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a> SHOW! They are a blast and it is one of the biggest radio stations in the community. Not only do you learn quickly how to be a DJ, you can experiment with what your show vibe should be.\u00a0 I loved every second of being on the air.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spend time in your relationships, be kind to others, seek to understand those you dislike the most. We don\u2019t walk around like that in Kansas City. Take advantage of that!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Culturally Responsive Communication\/Journalism &#8211; The course would be about how to appropriately and honestly share stories and participate in the journalism of communities of minorities\/under-served people.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Life is what you make of it. Go out, be brave, ask for help when you need, give help when others need it, and do your best!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">EDITOR&#8217;S NOTE<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Rachel has been featured in local news a couple of times.\u00a0 Once on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/local-news\/kc-school-teacher-wins-6000-grant-to-help-with-entrepreneurial-class\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KSHB-TV<\/a> for winning a $6000 grant to create Kansas City Studio 119, a maker&#8217;s space, at Lee A.
