When she\u2019s not behind a computer, Catherine enjoys eating good food with good people, listening to live music, and spending time with friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2014 with degrees in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/political-science-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Political Science<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication<\/a>, with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=13&amp;poid=1784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I worked as a teaching assistant in the Communication department and Political Science department, was a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/pspbeta.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phi Sigma Pi<\/a>\u00a0(a national honor fraternity), and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha (the Political Science honor fraternity).<\/p>\n<p>I also worked for small businesses in the community throughout college and really enjoyed getting to know <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirksvillecity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirksville<\/a> outside of campus. My favorite job was bartending at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukuminn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DuKum Inn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? \u00a0If so, where? \u00a0Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait? \u00a0Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I went to grad school immediately after undergrad to pursue a Master\u2019s Degree in Public Affairs at Mizzou. My years at Truman energized my love for learning and I knew I wanted to take my formal education one step further.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I began working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsimpact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GPS Impact<\/a> as a Graduate Intern my first year in Grad School. GPS Impact is a full-service public affairs and multimedia advertising agency that specializes in digital strategy for political campaigns and advocacy groups. As a Graduate Intern, I had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of projects and experience different parts of the agency.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, I accepted a full-time position as an Account Manager, writing digital content and helping campaigns and advocacy groups with their online strategy. When I accepted my first job at the agency, I knew I\u2019d found my people and I\u2019ve been there ever since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsimpact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-313 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/GPS.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/GPS.png 646w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/GPS-300x101.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I currently live in Kansas City and work as the Media Director for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsimpact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GPS Impact<\/a>. Everyday, I get to work with an incredibly talented and thoughtful team to help political clients across the country effectively communicate their message in the digital space.<\/p>\n<p>In my position, I develop media strategies for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpsimpact.com\/portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political campaigns and advocacy groups<\/a> and lead our in-house media buying team. When you combine working in an ever-changing digital landscape with the volatility of working in politics, there is never a dull moment! My job is fast paced, exciting, and incredibly fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My Liberal Arts education and experience at Truman shaped who I am today on both a personal and professional level. My experiences at Truman taught me to think critically, work hard, and consider other perspectives.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hmm. While other big moments happened during my time at Truman, nothing felt as good as turning in numerous research projects, team projects, and taking finals at the end of each semester. I enjoyed pushing myself and demonstrating how much I had learned.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the weeks leading up to finals seemed too daunting to be fun. Looking back, some of my favorite memories include sitting around the kitchen table with my roommate at 1 am studying for our exams.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman is the best place for a student to study because you are constantly surrounded by faculty and staff that care about you and will invest in your success, you will be surrounded by high caliber students that will elevate your classroom experience, and learning will be fun.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t realize it at the time, but it\u2019s special to leave every class feeling smarter than when you walked in.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find your area of interest and submit research to a conference. It\u2019s a great opportunity to explore something you\u2019re interested in, find mentors within the department, travel and have fun! My partner and I did research on the importance of repetition in message penetration and I think about it constantly in my field.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get involved in issues you care about. Volunteer with local campaigns. Use online tutorials to learn HTML. Run social media accounts for organizations you\u2019re involved in. Pay attention to changes in the industry. Pay attention to the news. <strong>Never stop learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman and Kirksville have such a special place in my heart.<\/p>\n<p>I miss my best friends being within a 5 mile radius (we\u2019re spread out across the country these days \u2014 \u00a0so many of them are doing amazing things!). I also miss talking to my professors regularly about everything happening in the world. Life after college is good too.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/smileys-clipart-emoji-9-e1512597359578.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink it, don\u2019t feel it\u201d (If you had a course with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/selfjw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Self<\/a>, you\u2019ll get the joke).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would want to tag team the political communication courses with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/selfjw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Self<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/yaquinto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Yaquinto<\/a>. Taking these courses gave me a leg up when I took my first job in the industry and I\u2019d want to set other students up for the same success.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-45 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/static1.squarespace-e1512598907526.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"161\" \/>My biggest advice to anyone in college or getting ready to start college would be to pick majors that sound interesting to you. I chose my majors by going through the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">catalog<\/a> and reading the description for each class offered at Truman. I highlighted the classes I thought sounded fun and tallied them up. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but I chose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/political-science-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Political Science<\/a> because I knew I would enjoy the coursework. Pursue things you are passionate about and the rest will work itself out. I now use both of my degrees, everyday, doing something I love.
