A native of Quincy, IL, Kenady graduated from high school in 2013. While at Truman, she was active in Greek Life\u00a0along side her studies. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends, family, and exploring new places in the city.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2017 with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Communication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am a <a href=\"http:\/\/truman.trisigma.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sigma Sigma Sigma<\/a> alumna, where I served as the Lip Sync Director, Assistant Recruitment Director, and Arc Leader. If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, I did not go to grad school.\u00a0 I chose to focus my energies on my career.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After graduation, I moved to Kansas City, MO to work for the <a href=\"https:\/\/content.naic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Insurance Commissioners<\/a> (NAIC). My friend and fellow communication grad, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/2021\/02\/09\/smith20210209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Smith<\/a>, introduced me to the company and I was lucky enough to intern in their Editing and Graphic Design department! I am a Proposal Coordinator for the Sales &amp; Marketing team within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.burnsmcd.com\/services\/electrical-transmission--distribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transmission &amp; Distribution<\/a> division.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My liberal arts\/COMM education provided me with the tools and resources I need to be a well-rounded individual. Most of what I do daily relates back to my courses at Truman \u2013 from working on project teams and collaborating with others with different backgrounds, presenting design ideas in front of large groups, or being open to new ideas and learning from others.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=442&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=20&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=1182&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publication Design and Layout<\/a> was a challenge that I\u2019m forever grateful for. In hindsight, this class would be one of the most important skills I took from Truman as I use Adobe InDesign every day. I have met so many wonderful people through classes and the organizations I was involved with who are now lifelong friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman is a very welcoming community and a great place for students to study. The campus is beautiful, and the buildings are relatively close together which makes it easy to see other students or friends on campus. The small class sizes at Truman allow students to make deeper connections with their professors and ask questions throughout the lecture. Overall, the professors truly care about their students and want them to succeed and there are many opportunities to interact with students with similar backgrounds or interests.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get involved! Join organizations or clubs that interest you and take classes that might not pertain to your major. Take as many courses as possible that interest you because you never know how they could apply to your life in the future. As a college student, I had no idea what a \u201cproposal coordinator\u201d was, or that I\u2019d be working for a large engineering company but my education from Truman gave me the core resources I needed to be successful in any career path I chose.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tour.truman.edu\/barnett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barnett Hall<\/a> \u2013 It\u2019s really not that far away.\u201d\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em>: Thank you! I&#8217;ve been saying&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dealing with Creatives in a Design Industry: It would all stem from the phrase \u201cmake this pretty.\u201d I would teach COMM students how to communicate their talents to other design\/creative professionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Going away for college and meeting new people can be intimidating, but a lot of students feel the same way during their freshman year. Getting to know other students in your dorm and\/or classes will help make the campus feel more like home.
