Susan Presley grew up in Michigan and has lived in Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois.\u00a0 She is currently serving as the pastor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fpcmendota.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Presbyterian Church<\/a> in Mendota, IL.\u00a0 After leaving Truman State University, Susan earned her M.Div. from Louisville Seminary, and is now pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry.\u00a0 Her areas of study include the role of gender-based groups in modern-day churches, as well as the study of the history of mass shootings in the United States.\u00a0 Susan&#8217;s passions include local charitable concerns, ecumenical endeavors, and having deep theological discussions with her cat, Pippa.\u00a0 Yes, she still does stand-up comedy on occasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2010 with a concentration in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a> and a minor in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/philosophy-and-religion-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Religion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_261\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"wp-image-261\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-mehdi-2009-e1517952204474.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-mehdi-2009-e1517952204474.jpg 738w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-mehdi-2009-e1517952204474-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan &amp; her debate partner Mehdi after winning some hardware (2009).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I competed with the <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forensics Union<\/a> (speech and debate teams).\u00a0 I was a member of the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, through which I became a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of Health Care Journalists<\/a>.\u00a0 I co-hosted a radio show on <a href=\"http:\/\/streaming.truman.edu:8000\/ktrm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a>.\u00a0 Off-campus, I worked for various local political causes and I performed stand-up comedy in town as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did.\u00a0 Since I knew I wanted to go into the ministry, I immediately left Truman, went to seminary, and got my Master&#8217;s of Divinity degree at Louisville Seminary in 2014.\u00a0 Since then, I&#8217;ve worked full time as a pastor.\u00a0 Fast forward three years later, and I have now started working on a Doctorate of Ministry also at Louisville Seminary.\u00a0 I should theoretically complete that in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to make a little cash while in grad school, I did some freelance journalism while getting my Master&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am now the Pastor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fpcmendota.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Presbyterian Church<\/a> of Mendota, IL.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_262\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-262\" class=\"wp-image-262\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/church-susan-preach.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/church-susan-preach.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/church-susan-preach-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan preaching on a Sunday morning in Mendota (2017).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My Liberal Arts\/COMM education has helped me in so many ways! Chief among them, though, would be the critical thinking skills that are taught across the entire spectrum of a Liberal Arts\/COMM degree. During my time at Truman, I learned to think differently and to analyze text and data instead of relying on anecdotal data when working out an issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can not stress this enough: <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=382&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Theory<\/a>. I loathed that class at the time, but the theories and application I learned helped me through both grad school and my career.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_264\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264\" class=\"wp-image-264\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-rubber-chicken.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-rubber-chicken.jpg 537w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-rubber-chicken-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan after winning a golden rubber chicken in a comedy contest (2009).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I won a stand-up comedy contest on a college campus at the age of 44. There was a golden rubber chicken as the prize. Yes, I still have that chicken.<\/p>\n<p>But seriously, my greatest accomplishment was when I was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ajnonline\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Journal of Nursing<\/a> (a national nursing journal) while still a Truman student. This helped me greatly in my journalism work.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The professor-to-student ratio is excellent.\u00a0 Truman students are largely taught by professors with PhDs, not grad students.\u00a0 Also, there are few adjuncts teaching on campus.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_265\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-image-265\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-wrongdaddys-e1517952934403.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-wrongdaddys-e1517952934403.jpg 358w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/02\/susan-wrongdaddys-e1517952934403-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan performing comedy as part of her JINS 356 class requirement (2009).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The small town atmosphere gives you a level of focus and gets you to interact with others you might not at a larger institution.\u00a0 Also, a small town atmosphere includes a very low cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?catoid=13&amp;navoid=617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JINS classes<\/a>.\u00a0 These are classes that get you to view a topic from multiple disciplines.\u00a0 I took <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=JINS&amp;filter%5B29%5D=356&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Art and Science of Humor<\/a>.\u00a0 We looked at comedy\/humor from sociological, physiological, psychological, rhetorical, and even mathematical perspectives.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join the <a href=\"http:\/\/forensics.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forensics team<\/a>, at least for one year. The speech and debate team changed everything for me, from the way I think to the way I speak in public.\u00a0 Those are pretty important factors in my field.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take courses about religions that aren\u2019t your own.\u00a0 Learning how others believe and worship is incredibly helpful in the real world. The lack of wait at the Department of Motor Vehicles.\u00a0 The lack of traffic.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirksvillearts.com\/newsite\/?page_id=65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">summer concerts on the square<\/a>.\u00a0 So many things to mention.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can\u2019t learn another discipline without this one.&#8221;\u00a0 How&#8217;s that?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People Not Like You Don\u2019t Suck&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0This would be a course in how, in a culture where everyone insists their voice must be heard, very few of us are actually listening. It would be about how we can put down our megaphones with which we demand our rights, and start to listen to others and see how we can help them in their quests.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll hear all sorts of points of view at Truman \u2013 from conservative to liberal, from educated to downright uninformed.
