{"id":2546,"date":"2021-06-29T00:00:12","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T00:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/?p=2546"},"modified":"2021-06-28T19:54:36","modified_gmt":"2021-06-28T19:54:36","slug":"gilmor20210629","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/2021\/06\/29\/gilmor20210629\/","title":{"rendered":"Julie (Staszko) Gilmor"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2550\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2550\" class=\"wp-image-2550\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Headshot-b.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Headshot-b.jpeg 916w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Headshot-b-240x300.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Headshot-b-820x1024.jpeg 820w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Headshot-b-768x959.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie (Staszko) Gilmor (2021)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Julie Gilmor was a 2017 Truman graduate.\u00a0 3 days after graduation, she started my first job.\u00a0 A year later, she married her high school sweetheart who (fun fact!) was Truman\u2019s 2016 Finance Student of the Year (bulldog love!).\u00a0 Julie resides in Parkville, MO (basically KC) where her and her husband just bought a house for their two corgis.\u00a0 In her freetime, Julie enjoys triathlon training, book clubs, and cooking.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2017 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Communication<\/a> concentration.\u00a0 I have a minor in <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=3755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2551\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2551\" class=\"wp-image-2551\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_LPE-b.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"351\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie (fr. center) and the rest of the graduating class of the Nu chapter of \u039b\u03a0\u0397 (2017).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like most Truman students, my calendar was always full and every week was different!\u00a0 I am a proud <a href=\"http:\/\/sigmakappa.truman.edu\/sigmakapp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sigma Kappa<\/a> alumna, where I served as a Membership and Social Chair.\u00a0 Greek Life also had a private organization, Order of Omega, which recognizes individuals \u201cwho have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leadership, involvement within their respective organization and within the Greek community, campus, and local community.\u201d I served as a member and Vice President of <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a>, the Communication Honor Fraternity.\u00a0 I also enjoyed my time as the Publicity Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Detours Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first job after graduation was as an Opportunity Coordinator with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.girlscouts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girl Scouts<\/a>.\u00a0 I largely helped launch their new registration website.\u00a0 I was promoted to a Brand Strategist where I wrote blogs, acted as a content manager for social media and helped plan and take photos of council events.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am a Marketing Manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/swellspark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swell Spark<\/a>, an entertainment company that owns and operates <a href=\"https:\/\/bladeandtimber.com\/\">Blade &amp; Timber Axe Throwing <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/swellspark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Breakout\/Get Out<\/a> escape rooms nation-wide.\u00a0 I am currently working on creating a brand book \/ voice guide for our newest entertainment concept, <a href=\"https:\/\/sinkerslounge.com\/\">Sinkers Lounge<\/a>.\u00a0 I champion our brands\u2019 social media, content calendar, digital and in-store promotions\/events, SEO, and advertising work.\u00a0 I just had the opportunity to work with Sporting Kansas City, our MLS team, to create an escape room for them! It\u2019s an incredibly fun job!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I found in talking with friends at other colleges, that a Truman degree was rigorous and holds weight when applying for jobs.\u00a0 I was encouraged by professors, fellow students and advisors to have my hands in lots of baskets, so to speak.\u00a0 Taking a variety of general classes early on helped me find my <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=20&amp;poid=3755\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">photography minor<\/a>, and allowed me to funnel into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public communication<\/a> concentration.\u00a0 It gave me the opportunity to explore a vast number of careers; I could go into a communication research career, journalism or broadcasting avenue, land in a marketing\/PR world or beyond.\u00a0 Upper-level communication courses taught me how to apply foundational knowledge into a simulated \u201cwork-life\u201d \u201cadulting\u201d career.\u00a0 It was invaluable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2552\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2552\" class=\"wp-image-2552\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Dogs-e1624731915800.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Dogs-e1624731915800.jpeg 801w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Dogs-e1624731915800-300x198.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Dogs-e1624731915800-768x506.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie and her corgis (2021).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=480&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=20&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=1182&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Organizational Communication<\/a>!\u00a0 This class covers theory, psychology, and application for how companies, businesses and organizations structure themselves and communicate.\u00a0 It\u2019s common to hear recent grads complain that they found it hard to directly apply their degree once they actually started working.\u00a0 I found this class to be a practical \u201c4-1-1\u201d of how the company you work for communicates.\u00a0 It also helped steer me away from companies that didn\u2019t fit my ideal job structure.<\/p>\n<p>I was also a debate kid in high school, and trust me, <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=170&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=20&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=1182&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public speaking<\/a> is SO IMPORTANT.\u00a0 You need to know how to pitch ideas to your boss, clients and co-workers.\u00a0 It will help you gain confidence you need when defending your work!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Getting my internship with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parriscommunications.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parris Communications<\/a>!\u00a0 Kansas City is a relatively small market for PR\/Marketing\/Advertising.\u00a0 Parris Communications is one of just a handful of PR firms in the area, and they only accepted one intern per summer.\u00a0 I was getting ready to take my last final for the semester when I received the email that I was selected and there was no better feeling in the world!\u00a0 When all of your hard work pays off, that feeling is priceless.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The professors, class sizes, competitive peers around you\u2026. Truman has an atmosphere like no other!\u00a0 Your professors truly become your friends.\u00a0 Get to know them and use their life experiences as a launch point.\u00a0 They are the best of the best.\u00a0 The class sizes helped make courses feel less intimidating and more intimate. I had the opportunity to ask any question I wanted during class, set up meetings when I was needing help, and got to know my classmates well enough to form study groups.\u00a0 Truman students are the most dedicated students I know. Yaquinto (L) and Self (R) (2017).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get a commuter pass if you live off campus (LOL. I don\u2019t miss the hill to Barnett)!<\/p>\n<p>In all seriousness, get involved.\u00a0 This is your time to have FUN in a way that is so unique to undergrad life.\u00a0 Find your network of like-minded people to keep you on track.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2554\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2554\" class=\"wp-image-2554\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Biking-e1624732516936.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Biking-e1624732516936.jpeg 386w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/06\/Julie_Biking-e1624732516936-200x300.jpeg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie training for a triathalon (2020).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Never be afraid to branch out and add minors that interest you!\u00a0\u00a0 Looking back, adding a photography minor is one of the best things I did for myself.\u00a0 It taught me an extremely valuable skill that landed me jobs.\u00a0 Learning the Adobe suite and being able to market myself as a photographer gave me a leg-up against other young applicants.\u00a0 Find a niche that not a lot of other students are committed to and go for it.
