Originally from St. Louis but now a traveling citizen of the world, she creates marketing content for businesses and ghostwrites books as she wanders. Anya loves living a life off the beaten path, forming connections all over the globe, and being a strong voice advocating for what she believes in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate, and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2014 with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Communication<\/a> and a minor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/music-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Music \u2013 Piano Performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a radio DJ at <a href=\"https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/category\/ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KTRM<\/a> (and occasionally a live DJ) for many semesters. Although my main job was marketing related, I wore many hats (partially so I could better learn the business\u2019 ins and outs and partially so my Uncle didn\u2019t feel like I was a nepotic hire). I also played the roles of gymnastics teacher, front desk staff, and administrative assistant.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have been running my own business as a content writer for four years now. I provide marketing content services for companies, such as writing website content, blog content, email campaign content, etc. I also have shifted my business in the past couple of years to offer ghostwriting services for books. The first book I ghostwrote will be published in Spring 2021.<\/p>\n<p>I am also living as a digital nomad\u2013\u2013I gave up my apartment, sold my car and nearly all my possessions, and decided to pursue my dreams of working remotely as I wander the world. I left the US in August 2020, which was not what I had planned initially, but the timing worked out to create a safer distance from the epicenter of the pandemic and the tumultuous political situation.<\/p>\n<p>I am an outspoken activist (a role that has only strengthened since I left Truman) and was raised as a Humanist. In October 2020, I was elected President of <a href=\"https:\/\/humanists.international\/about\/young-humanists-international\/\">Young Humanists International<\/a>, which awarded me a seat on the Board of <a href=\"https:\/\/humanists.international\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humanists International<\/a>. As a blend of English, Sociology, Marketing, the Humanities, and so much more, I have seen many more applications for my degree in the business world than I expected. I also believe that a Liberal Arts education is instrumental in navigating disinformation. <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=471&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persuasion Theory<\/a> refined my critical thinking skills and the ability to identify propaganda quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=455&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communication Law<\/a> was a bear of a class. Naturally, the content in that class was much drier than, say, <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=315&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Family Communication<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=454&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advertising<\/a>. But I\u2019m very grateful to have taken it\u2013\u2013knowing how to protect myself and others (and how to avoid legal issues) as a public communicator is vital.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2360\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2360\" class=\"wp-image-2360\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/01\/TSU-grad-pic--e1612028914352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/01\/TSU-grad-pic--e1612028914352.jpg 604w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2021\/01\/TSU-grad-pic--e1612028914352-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anya at graduation (2014).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look\u2013\u2013I\u2019m a straight shooter: it was definitely graduating in three years while wrestling with depression and anxiety. <em>And<\/em> I graduated just in time to not have to take out any student loans.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of the professors are very supportive and genuinely interested in seeing their students succeed. When I reflect on my academic experience at Truman, I think fondly of several of my professors and the experiences they created for me. Truman is certainly not an \u201ceasy\u201d school, but it makes the learning process far more meaningful when the professors want to build rapport with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=471&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persuasion Theory<\/a>. Our world is littered with dangerous propaganda and disinformation, and this class is essential in learning how to navigate what\u2019s real and what\u2019s a manipulation of the truth. Build your experience with gig work\u2013\u2013<em>paid<\/em> gig work.. You can start small and advocate your way into bigger and more lucrative opportunities. I write about <a href=\"https:\/\/anyaovermann.com\/blog\/7-reasons-why-you-should-hire-a-writer\">why businesses should hire writers on my blog<\/a>. Get a mentor, or even consider paying someone who specializes in helping people grow their business. When you build a reputation of producing qulaity work and promote that reputation amongst a network of people with whom you\u2019ve built relationships, client-getting becomes easier.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theaquadome.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Aquadome<\/a>\u2013\u2013which I know is a relic of the past. But man, were there some fun events at that venue!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA degree you\u2019ll use everyday!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Advocacy \u2013\u00a0How to Advocate for Yourself &amp; Ideas You Care About<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t stress yourself out with academic perfection. Most employers and clients don\u2019t really care about what you did in school, they care if you can do the job (and frankly, how much work they can get out of you at the lowest rate). Learn as much as you can because education is truly valuable and our country is being ripped to shreds by people who don\u2019t value education, but understand that work experience is far more valuable to the people who will pay you. And when do you eventually join the work force, advocate for yourself!
