Originally a biology major, Shelby quickly realized her passion was not in studying cells and plant life, but for studying language and meaning in the Communication Department. Shelby is currently Senior Product Lead for Fleet Technology applications at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unigroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UniGroup<\/a> in Fenton, MO. When she\u2019s not working, Shelby enjoys cooking, reading, and hanging out with her husband, Jason, and their two dogs.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated May of 2014 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Studies<\/a> concentration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was involved in <a href=\"http:\/\/ccftruman.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Campus Christian Fellowship<\/a> (CCF) as a student intern and <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a>. My senior year I worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/ub.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Upward Bound<\/a> as an academic tutor. If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did not go to grad school! I considered it but after completing my summer research project, realized it wasn\u2019t for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My first job after college was admissions counseling. I started out as the local admissions representative for Missouri S&amp;T (in the town where I grew up.) Eventually I moved to Saint Louis and served as the regional admissions counselor for the STL Metro.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I work for a moving company called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unigroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UniGroup<\/a> in the IT Software Development group as a Senior Product Lead. Product Managers help software development teams prioritize what\u2019s most important as they take in new ideas for software features and new requirements for business needs. I lead two mobile app teams and have to collaboratively work with engineers, designers, and business stakeholders to decide what we work on and communicate new features to our users.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m regularly communicating to a variety of audiences, whether it\u2019s one on one with my engineers or designer, in stakeholder meetings, to large crowds at product demos or conferences. The key to working with engineers is in asking good questions, and I definitely learned that at Truman!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be honest\u2014I don\u2019t remember hating any! That year, we pulled off several unique women\u2019s events that helped people feel engaged in the group and contributed to the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I loved my time at Truman. The student body at large is a really motivated group and it is special to be studying with other students who really care about what they\u2019re learning. I also think the faculty at Truman are unique. They are really dedicated to instruction and always willing to go the extra mile.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You should absolutely get involved on campus, whether that\u2019s in a club, working for the newspaper, or whatever. Finding your niche is key to a good college experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Definitely look for internships and reach out to professional organizations. There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenpm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in Product<\/a> group in St. Louis, as well as a St. Louis Product Managers organization (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PDMA<\/a>.) Reach out to the professional groups and let them know you\u2019re a student who is interested in learning more and possibly finding an internship. People are really willing to help!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I miss the easy access to my friends and small town life. We would always bike around and walk to the town square for the farmer\u2019s market or coffee shop. I definitely miss that casual lifestyle! With my college friends spread all over the country, it\u2019s harder to see all the people I want to see. The more I\u2019ve gotten into my career, the more I realize that there\u2019s so much still to learn!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can really do anything with a Communication degree, and one way to jumpstart that process is by prioritizing your career development in school. Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/career.truman.edu\/career-grad-school-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Career Expo<\/a>, apply to internships, really try a lot of different career options.
