Leaving in 2015, she was overwhelmed at what her future might look like. She took a leap of faith, moved to Texas and hasn&#8217;t looked back. Claire took a \u201cgap year\u201d and became a leader in the education sector with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityyear.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City Year<\/a>. Working with at-risk youth put her through challenges she couldn\u2019t learn in a classroom. Fast forward four years later, and Claire is now in Talent Acquisition with <a href=\"https:\/\/whataburger.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whataburger<\/a>, has expertise as a Sourcer at Google, and has one foot in the door with the corporate world. Her education, friendship and the community at Truman will forever stick with her.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2015 with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1582\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"wp-image-1582\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/11\/Duran-DZ-e1573748277636.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/11\/Duran-DZ-e1573748277636.jpg 524w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/11\/Duran-DZ-e1573748277636-180x300.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Claire (front row left) and her \u0394\u0396 sisters (2014).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I was a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/deltazeta.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delta Zeta<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/akpsi.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alpha Kappa Psi<\/a>.\u00a0 I also served on the <a href=\"http:\/\/homecoming.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homecoming Committee<\/a>, worked at <a href=\"https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/category\/ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a>, and was a member of the Student Philanthropy Council.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have not gone to grad school yet, but soon will be.\u00a0 I have been accepted to the University of Texas at San Antonio for Public Administration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityyear.org\/san-antonio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City Year San Antonio<\/a> \u2013 An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalservice.gov\/programs\/americorps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AmeriCorps<\/a> program focused on tutoring and mentorship of at-risk youth.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I currently am on the Talent Acquisition team with <a href=\"https:\/\/whataburger.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Whataburger<\/a> in San Antonio, TX. I recruit leadership roles in the Operations side of the business; to include multi-unit managers, Directors and Regional Directors. Prior to this, I recruited for software engineers at Google.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My degree has helped me to have a more well-rounded perspective on everything \u2013 I believe I am better able to see multiple sides to a situation and can analyze complex problems. It forced me to focus, and to think outside of the box. It was definitely the class that showed me I can accomplish anything if I put my mind to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completing my degree \u2013 several different obstacles and distractions came my way, so I remain proud of myself for receiving my degree in four years.\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em>:\u00a0 We&#8217;re proud of you too).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think the environment built us to be independent.\u00a0 I was able to develop healthy study habits on my own while being near motivated friends who wanted to study with me in the library or the SUB.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get involved in whatever you like.\u00a0 Take a chance and run for a leadership role in whatever organizations you join. We learn it in college on our own when creating our class schedules, organizing study hours and coordinating in social events. Take it with you in your career; a huge part of my role is strategizing my time and utilizing it in the most productive way. Creating a schedule and staying loyal to it has increased my successes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jefferson Street \u2013 it was a blast always finding a friend when you walked outside.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Communication NOT Communications \u2013 it may not be a major listed on job applications, but stick to it!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Impact of a Gap Year \u2013 it would show students the various programs available to them that could qualify as a gap year, how to apply to programs, peer edits on essays, interview preparation, guides on budgets, ways to cope being away from home, meditation, support groups, networking events.
