Of course, she also likes to drive across Missouri on I-70 as much as possible to visit friends and family in her hometown of St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2012 with a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a> and minors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/business-administration-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Administration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/justice-systems-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justice Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I loved being busy while at Truman; I was a part of <a href=\"http:\/\/truman.trisigma.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma Sigma Sigma<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/homecoming.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homecoming<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/greekweek.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greek Week<\/a> committees, and a few Communication organizations, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/adpr.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advertising &amp; PR Organization<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/LPHTSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a>. If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did!\u00a0 I attended grad school at Rockhurst University while working full time at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cerner<\/a> and received my Masters in Business Administration in December 2017.\u00a0 I wanted to get my career started and ensure I knew where I wanted to focus my career path.\u00a0 Looking back, I am glad that I waited 3 years before starting school because I was able to apply my business-world experiences in the classroom, while being able to mentor those students who immediately attended grad school.\u00a0 I was also able to receive tuition assistance from my company which allowed me to focus on my studies and not the financial stress.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1574\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1574\" class=\"wp-image-1574\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/41990623_10104032795657314_6365386079519899648_o-e1572379017295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/41990623_10104032795657314_6365386079519899648_o-e1572379017295.jpg 780w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/41990623_10104032795657314_6365386079519899648_o-e1572379017295-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/41990623_10104032795657314_6365386079519899648_o-e1572379017295-768x1001.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magen (L) and co-workers recruiting at a Career Fair (2018).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cerner<\/a> in a business training program after graduation.\u00a0 From there I moved into HR taking on a few different positions until getting to where I am today.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am responsible for recruiting strategy and full lifecycle recruitment for Cerner\u2019s early career jobs by partnering with the various business organizations and understanding their human capital needs.\u00a0 I manage a team of highly skilled recruiters who are responsible for hundreds of hires per year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I see my degree at work every day, but I would say the biggest way is knowing how to communicate and work with others.\u00a0 It\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll be successful in business if you don\u2019t work in groups and Truman had us work on group projects constantly.\u00a0 One of my favorite memories was in <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=251&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Media Writing<\/a> when my team and I did a project on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capeair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cape Air<\/a>; we even got to stand on the runway and record an airplane taking off.\u00a0 This project was one of many that I had to rely on other people in order to accomplish a common goal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=170&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Speaking<\/a> \u2013 I remember I would read directly from my notecards or PowerPoint and had a hard time feeling confident when speaking in front of a room.\u00a0 But this class helped me practice and gain the skills needed to speak in front of others. I had to present to a room of a hundred women each week, so again my <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=170&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Speaking<\/a> class had a huge impact on my ability to lead.\u00a0 I also knew from this experience that people management was something I was very interested in pursuing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The liberal arts education allowed me to take classes in a lot of different fields which made me a well-rounded individual.\u00a0 Also, the writing enhanced classes helped prepare me for grad school \u2013 writing a 5 to 10 page paper was easy for me, while many of my classmates did not have this experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1578\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1578\" class=\"wp-image-1578\" style=\"font-size: 12px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/25827_1411124121839_8087845_n-e1572380639857.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/25827_1411124121839_8087845_n-e1572380639857.jpg 355w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/10\/25827_1411124121839_8087845_n-e1572380639857-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magen (2nd fr right) and her fellow SUB Information Desk workers (2011).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get involved!\u00a0 Truman has something for everyone, and college will be so much more rewarding if you are a part of an organization.\u00a0 I would also say to make sure you get an internship or job in a field that interests you.\u00a0 I had two internships: one over the summer at a convention center and one during the school year at the <a href=\"http:\/\/career.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Career Center<\/a>.\u00a0 Both experiences directly impacted my after-graduation plans and allowed me to see what I liked and didn\u2019t like in various communication fields.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do it!\u00a0 Recruiting and Human Resources are the backbone of any company.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great accomplishment when you find the right person, for the right position, for the right team, and at the right time.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I miss having all of my friends in one town and being able to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lapamexicanbargrill1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Pa<\/a> at any given time.\u00a0 Truman has amazing students and I met some of my best friends there.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;COMM one, COMM all.&#8221;\u00a0 &#x1f60a;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Communication &amp; Leadership: How to confidently sell yourself and influence others. \u00a0Any person working in business needs to have strong communication and leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Enjoy the time you are at Truman, because the time will go quick!
