She spent the summer after graduating teaching English in Taiwan and came back home to an internship at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR Chicago<\/a> for the weekly news game show, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/wait-wait-dont-tell-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wait, Wait\u2026Don\u2019t Tell Me!<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 Now, she works for <a href=\"https:\/\/jci.cc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JCI<\/a> (Junior Chamber International), a nonprofit partnered with the United Nations, where she writes and copyedits news stories and scripts. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling around the US and recording <a href=\"https:\/\/podtail.com\/en\/podcast\/all-that-a-bottle-of-wine\/all-that-a-bottle-of-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>All That &amp; a Bottle of Wine<\/em><\/a> with her co-host, Lauren Goldberger.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2014 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a> concentration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a Radio DJ for the short-lived, but lovely, Dobson Radio Club, a News Reporter for <a href=\"https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/blog\/category\/ktrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTRM<\/a>, Publicity Chair for the 2011 <a href=\"http:\/\/homecoming.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homecoming Committee<\/a> and Vice-Chairman for the 2012 Homecoming Committee. If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have not attended grad school. Immediately after Truman, I moved to Taiwan and taught English and writing lessons to grade school students in various villages throughout Changhua City for four months.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After returning from Taiwan, my first big girl job was at NPR in Chicago as the Production Intern for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/wait-wait-dont-tell-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Wait, Wait\u2026Don\u2019t Tell Me<\/em><\/a>. Their mission is to provide young people with the tools they need to create grassroots projects that can make global impact.<\/p>\n<p>My job is to gather information about these young active citizens and share their stories with the world. I write news stories, newsletters, press releases, speeches for our president and scripts for our biggest company event, JCI World Congress. I\u2019ve been able to write, edit audio, copyedit, interview, design, market for, and run events that may be as small as 25 attendees or even number in the thousands. I wouldn\u2019t have been able to do this without the unique style Truman and the COMM Department takes to shape their students.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I hated <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=170&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=15&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=791&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Speaking<\/a> with a passion. I was a Freshmen and shy and very uncomfortable with speaking out loud. I didn\u2019t think COMM was for me because of this class, which led me down the road of switching my major one too many times that year until I made my way back to Barnett Hall. Now, I see how important this tool is and value the lessons I learned about effective communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can I say graduation day? Because I\u2019m going to say graduation day.<\/p>\n<p>Academically, Truman was a challenge for me, but it was one that helped me grow and mature in a way that an easier university wouldn\u2019t have. Although, Kirksville may not be the liveliest town, but it has a strong community vibe that has and forever will feel like my home away from home.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work on campus! I worked and interned at the <a href=\"http:\/\/csi.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Student Involvement<\/a> (CSI) from Sophomore year until the day I graduated. It took me looking at the writing and activities I was doing for fun to see what my true interests were. It would be about the new wave of radio and communication, specifically podcasting and how this medium has changed the radio world as well as how to create a podcast.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Create Media, Create Yourself?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Is that too cheesy?\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 This is a hard question!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think we covered it all! Also, sorry again about the cheesy tagline. The more I look at it, the more I hate it.
