Outside of her day job, she volunteers at the Denver County Jail, developing a program to support inmates transitioning out of jail. She is passionate about her houseplants and good grammar.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2011, Public Communication<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a writer for the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Index<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detours<\/a>, the president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LPHTSU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lambda Pi Eta<\/a>\u00a0(the national honor society for COMM) and a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccftruman.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Campus Christian Fellowship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_146\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"wp-image-146\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-4.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-4-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dana at graduation (May, 2011).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I finished at Truman, I had no intentions of going to grad school, but a bit of world travel and some nonprofit work made me realize I wanted to pursue a career in the international development field.\u00a0 I needed additional education in order to do that.\u00a0 So, I waited three years after graduation from Truman to start grad school.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve since earned my M.A. in International Development from the University of Denver.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My initial paying job was a PR internship at <a href=\"http:\/\/fleishmanhillard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FleishmanHillard<\/a> in St. Louis. After that, I interned for a development organization in Thailand, which influenced my decision to attend grad school.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am the Content Manager &amp; Writer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterforpeople.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Water For People<\/a>, a nonprofit that focuses on promoting safe water and sanitation services in nine countries. In my role, I spend my days writing and project managing content that serves two purposes: fundraising to expand Water For People\u2019s work and educating our audiences about the impact of our work. Yes, you have to take theory classes (more on these later), but there are also opportunities (via classes, clubs, and on campus media outlets) to get very tangible hard skills that employers really value.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-155 alignright\" style=\"font-size: 12px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/TMN-Placeholder-2-326x245-e1515184149451.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/TMN-Placeholder-2-326x245-e1515184149451.png 326w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/TMN-Placeholder-2-326x245-e1515184149451-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/>Two things. First, write for the Index (now the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Truman Media Network<\/a>) and in general, pursue any opportunities to write in shorter forms that aren\u2019t research papers. When writing for student media, you have to be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>produce articles every week, which gets you in the practice of writing often (and helps you build your portfolio).<\/li>\n<li>write succinctly but still get all of the important information across, which is a critical skill.<\/li>\n<li>get used to being edited heavily and often, which is good to get used to early in your career!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Second, take <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=442&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Publication Design &amp; Layout<\/a>. I have used basic Adobe Creative Suite skills in every nonprofit marketing job I\u2019ve had and it is such a great \u201chard skill\u201d to have as a marketer. It even was one of the clinchers to getting my first job out of grad school, despite having fewer years of marketing experience than other candidates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_151\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151\" class=\"wp-image-151\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-3.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2018\/01\/20180327-DdeAndres-Truman-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just chilling outside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/student-life\/housing\/campus-housing-options\/campbell-apartments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Campbell Apartments<\/a> during Kirksville&#8217;s &#8220;Snowmageddon&#8221; (2010).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a stretch to say I disliked these classes, but I would say I was skeptical about the value of <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=382&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Theory<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=471&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Persuasion Theory<\/a>; however, I have come across so many instances where I have applied principles of theories learned in these classes (Thanks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/selfjw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Self<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/faculty-staff\/jciancio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Cianciola<\/a>!). I did my final Persuasion Theory paper on the Narrative Paradigm, and I find myself in so many situations in my job where the Narrative Paradigm is hugely applicable.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ways I grew personally and academically at Truman opened my eyes to the world, leading me to move to Thailand for six months, which has resulted in working in a field I truly love. I\u2019m proud of the ways I pushed myself to grow during college, and so happy with the trajectory it set me on. Life would look so different if it weren\u2019t for Truman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman gives you a lot space to tailor a program to exactly what you want. I was able to get two minors (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/music-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Music<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/psychology-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Psychology<\/a>) alongside my Communication major! Class sizes are small, so you are able to interact more with professors than at larger universities. Personally, I loved the simplicity of life on campus and in Kirksville and found it to be a great place to spend my four years for college.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take every opportunity you can to become a good writer and storyteller. Even outside of marketing roles, writing is arguably the single most important professional skills you can have. We\u2019re now scattered across the country and often reminisce about our time in Kirksville &#8212; summertime farmers\u2019 markets, long-distance running through every corner of town, frequent dinners at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lapachangaparty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Pachanga<\/a>, and so much more.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunication: The Foundation of \u2026 <em>Everything<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nonprofit Marketing and Communications! It would focus on the types of communication you most commonly work on in nonprofits (social media, emails, annual reports, press releases, and impact stories) and rely heavily on storytelling frameworks and elements of persuasion and the narrative theory.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It sounds so cheesy, but follow your heart. If you pursue a career in public communication and marketing, you will be spending 40+ hours a week \u201cselling\u201d something. It might be a product, an event, a cause, or an idea.
