She currently works for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dstsystems.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DST Systems<\/a> as a Solutions Consultant where she spends her days trying to figure out \u201chow in the world will I ever graph that?\u201d Kayla is an avid traveler and is currently planning a trip to Sonoma CA. In her free time she coaches for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.girlsontherun.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Girls on the Run<\/a>, finds lots of free outdoor yoga classes, and constantly listens to podcasts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated spring of 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with an emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a>. In addition to my Communication major, I studied as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-disorders-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Disorders<\/a> major in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/academic-departments\/about-school-of-health-sciences-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Health Sciences and Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1361\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1361\" class=\" wp-image-1361\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/06\/IMG_3828.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/06\/IMG_3828.jpg 602w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/06\/IMG_3828-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kayla at a sorority function at a Thousand Hills State Park (2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I held multiple leadership positions within the social sorority <a href=\"http:\/\/sigmakappa.truman.edu\/sigmakapp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sigma Kappa<\/a>. I was involved with the the <a href=\"http:\/\/adpr.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ad &amp; PR Club<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ama.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Marketing Association<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/coda.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Disorders Club<\/a> \u201cTop Secret Research Project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I also worked as a lifeguard at the Truman State <a href=\"http:\/\/natatorium.truman.edu\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natatorium<\/a> and as a front desk associate at the Truman State Speech and Hearing Clinic.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school? If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I went to grad school, but not immediately.\u00a0 I graduated with my Masters of Business Administration from Rockhurst University in December of 2017.<\/p>\n<p>I waited to start business school until I had at least a year of professional experience. I decided to get my Master\u2019s Degree because I realized I was lacking core business competencies like finance, accounting, etc. I knew these are skills that I could learn on the job but ultimately I could learn them faster by going back to school.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I worked as a Client Relations Specialist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dstsystems.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DST Systems<\/a> in Kansas City, MO. I gained experience working as a project manager and business analyst for our clients in the Financial Services\/Technology industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, I am a Solutions Consultant at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dstsystems.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DST Systems<\/a> in Minneapolis, MN. Knowing HOW to get to an answer is more important than knowing EVERY right answer.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve created project and technical documentation in every role. My COMM degree gave me the confidence to create well written documents that have been used by my peers for years. Writing clearly and simply is an in-demand skill.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did not realize how important <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=382&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=15&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=791&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Theory<\/a> would be to my everyday life. Explore a topic of study just because you can. When you leave college you won\u2019t have the free time to explore topics with your peers &#8220;just because.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get varied experiences. Learning how to recognize and manage my own emotions has helped me manage my own stress. Learning about emotional intelligence has helped me navigate crucial conversations in my personal and work life. I have become a more empathic person once I learned more about my own emotional stressors.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you leave Truman so many students think they have to have the perfect job straight out of college. It\u2019s normal to not know what you want to do. Every time you try a new job you will find something you like and something you dislike, and each experience will bring you closer to the \u201cperfect\u201d job.<\/p>\n<p>Your GPA does not matter in the real world. Take classes that challenge you to be smarter and don\u2019t worry about the B or C on your transcript.<\/p>\n<p>Get your headshot taken at the <a href=\"http:\/\/career.truman.edu\/career-grad-school-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Career Fair<\/a>.
