These days he specializes in online privacy, cybersecurity, fraud and scams, web censorship, and net neutrality. Since graduating from Truman he has lived in eight countries and travelled to more than two dozen. He has worked remotely from home for the past six years and plans to never have an office job again. He also moonlights as a solo video game developer and is wrapping up his first title, <em>Ambidangerous<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in 2012 with a concentration in Journalism.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I worked at News 36 (now TMN-TV), eventually working my way up to Executive Producer. I\u2019d like to think that my efforts gave other students a place to hone their skills and create reels for their future careers.\u00a0 (<em>Editor&#8217;s note<\/em>: They did.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can be a big fish in a small pond.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t just get the degree. Get real industry experience by joining the Index, News 36, or KTRM. Get an internship or two. Build a portfolio. A lot of online publishers, where you\u2019ll likely start out working, value this skill.<\/p>\n<p>Expertise in a subject outside of your degree will also help you get a foot in the door. For me, that\u2019s technology and the internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SEO: How to write for Google &#8211; basically a class on how to game Google search results so your articles and content appear at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Another idea: Alternative business models to advertising for news media<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;or&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Protecting sources: How to communicate privately and\/or anonymously over the internet as a journalist.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Journalism is one of the fastest changing fields in the world right now because of the internet. Competition, reporting practices, business models, dissemination and discovery, hiring, security, audience interaction, and trust models are all evolving. Your professors are old and can teach you the fundamentals, but being a journalist today means being able to quickly adapt.
