Dan and Meaghan&#8217;s 11-month-old daughter, Reese, is the center of their lives and they are excited to add a little boy to their family in October.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1297\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1297\" class=\"wp-image-1297\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/05\/headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/05\/headshot.jpg 391w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/05\/headshot-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meaghan (L) Rettke (2018)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Meaghan (Larson) Rettke<\/strong> serves as the Secretary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.websterhillsumc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Webster Hills United Methodist Church<\/a> Leadership Board.\u00a0 Her marketing internships at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixflags.com\/stlouis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Six Flags &#8211; St. Louis<\/a> led to an opportunity to join the Group Sales team and combine her Communication degree with her love of event planning.\u00a0 Meaghan was named the 2012 Six Flags Account Executive of the Year and was promoted to General Sales Manager in 2017.\u00a0 Meaghan likes to say that she sells fun for a living. Outside of work, Meaghan enjoys spending her free time with family and close friends. Meaghan and Dan have an adorable, adopted, fluffy yellow dog that was our first love before they added their daughter Reese.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dan (<strong>D<\/strong>):\u00a0 I graduated in 2009 with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journalism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meaghan (<strong>M<\/strong>):\u00a0 I graduated in 2010 with a concentration in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Communication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:\u00a0<\/strong> I served in various roles at News 36 (now known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/News36KTRMTV\/featured\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN-TV<\/a>) including Executive Producer. If so, where?\u00a0 Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:\u00a0<\/strong> I didn&#8217;t immediately after I left Truman, but I&#8217;m graduating with a Masters in Management and Leadership in Spring 2020 from Webster University.\u00a0 A great benefit of my job is that my employer paid for my advanced degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:\u00a0<\/strong> I have not attended grad school. Still University<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/visitkirksville.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirksville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong>\u00a0 I became an Account Executive Group Sales Department at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixflags.com\/stlouis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Six Flags \u2013 St. Louis<\/a> after previously interning with Six Flags in Public Relations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:\u00a0<\/strong> I am an Assistant Vice President of Retail Operations and Marketing at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubu.bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Bank of Union.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am now the General Sales Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixflags.com\/stlouis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Six Flags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:<\/strong> It helped me become more resourceful and develop my problem solving skills. I also learned how to translate those skills across various fields and experiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong> Truman taught me to be well-rounded and comprehensive in my approach in leading my team. Practical experience in event planning with the <a href=\"http:\/\/sab.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Activities Board<\/a> really set me up for future success.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=245&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=15&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=791&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rhetoric<\/a>. I was fascinated about the subject, but grasping the idea of how powerful words truly are was daunting to me. Now, I use those skills and that approach on a daily basis. I got to intern for 3 weeks with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a> at the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions because of my work at <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN<\/a>. Watching Barack Obama\u2019s nomination acceptance speech is a pretty special memory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong> Take advantage of the knowledge and experiences of the faculty and their connections to alumni for future opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:<\/strong> Overall, I think it is important to find a job that you enjoy. To do that, you must first understand what you value in a position. I realized through my experiences that I enjoyed problem solving, creativity, variety, motivating others, and being supported in my work. Some of my greatest friends in life I met at Truman. You make friends easily and enjoy time creatively in a small town like Kirksville, and those are my favorite memories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong> We made life-long friends and unbelievable connections. I miss that the most.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D:<\/strong> Problem Solving Communication<\/p>\n<p><strong>M:<\/strong> Political Communication in Today\u2019s Society<\/p>\n<p>Based on Truman\u2019s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/serve.truman.edu\/the-big-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Event community service project<\/a>, Dan started \u201cProject United\u201d in 2015 as a bi-annual community service event as community outreach on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubu.bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Bank of Union<\/a>. Through nine events, more than 1200 volunteers representing more than 50 unique organizations have completed more than 4800 hours of community service on nearly 75 unique projects across the city of Union.
