Previously, she lived in New York City for 2.5 years, and held fundraising positions at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenschools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citizen Schools<\/a> New York and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newclassrooms.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Classrooms<\/a>. In her free time, Julianna enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures. If so, where? Was it immediately after you left Truman or did you wait?\u00a0 Why?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I plan to pursue a Masters degree in the future. I decided to not go right after Truman because I wanted to get some experience first.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I relocated to New York City in July 2016 after I graduated, and took a position as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalservice.gov\/programs\/americorps\/americorps-programs\/americorps-vista\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Americorps VISTA<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizenschools.org\/new-york-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citizen Schools New York<\/a>.\u00a0 In this role, I drafted grant proposals, reports, and letters of interest to foundations and corporations, as well as supported other fundraising activities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1177\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1177\" class=\"wp-image-1177\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/Fellows-12-e1553635349383.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/Fellows-12-e1553635349383.jpg 1439w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/Fellows-12-e1553635349383-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/Fellows-12-e1553635349383-768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/Fellows-12-e1553635349383-1024x591.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julianna at the 2016 Recognition Day for National Service in NYC.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What work do you do\/What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After living in New York City for a few years, I decided to come back to the Midwest. In February, I started a new role at <u><a href=\"https:\/\/jci.cc\">JCI<\/a><\/u>, which is located in St. Louis. I am leading their fundraising team, and I&#8217;ve been charged with developing our strategies for our various fundraising campaigns. I am also managing an initiative of JCI, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gyefund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Youth Empowerment Fund<\/a>.\u00a0 This is truly my dream job as it\u2019s a perfect balance for my professional career in fundraising and personal passion for empowering young leaders around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How has your Liberal Arts\/COMM education helped you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman\u2019s Liberal Arts program allowed me to take classes in a variety of areas besides my major. I spent a semester in Orlando, FL completing an internship through the <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.disneycareers.com\/disney-college-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disney College Program<\/a>,\u00a0I spent a semester in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Angers,+France\/@46.9197205,2.3442296,7.2z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x480878da00e58e9d:0x40d37521e0d9c30!8m2!3d47.4711616!4d-0.5518257?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Angers, France<\/a> taking business classes with international students from around the world, and I spent a summer in Taiwan teaching ESL.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1182\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1182\" class=\"wp-image-1182\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/collage-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/collage-1.jpg 1446w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/collage-1-300x90.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/collage-1-768x231.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/03\/collage-1-1024x308.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julianna in France (left, 2016) and in Taiwan (right, 2015).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Truman offered me the flexibility to be able to take an entire year away from campus to complete an internship and study abroad, and I believe these experiences made me a more well-rounded person when I started my first full-time position.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While I generally liked all my classes in the Communication major, one of my least favorites was <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=382&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Theory<\/a>. At the time, a lot of the material seemed very abstract and not useful for my career; however, I kept the book, and it\u2019s the book I reference the most since I\u2019ve graduated, as a lot of the theories I\u2019ve seen play out in real life at work.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What was your greatest accomplishment at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think one of the hardest classes in the Communication Department is the <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=454&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=14&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=681&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Advertising<\/a> class. We had to put together an entire advertising campaign for a client, and I remember our implementation plan with our detailed strategy was about 50 pages. At the end of the semester, we had to present the campaign to our class. It was definitely the project I\u2019m most proud of during my time at Truman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Why is Truman a good place for a student to study?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman has amazing professors that care about their students. It\u2019s a great way to leave the campus bubble and gain some relevant work experience before your first full-time job.<\/p>\n<p>I would also recommend joining at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/majors-programs\/majors-minors\/communication-major\/communication-student-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">communication-related club<\/a> or getting involved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I work for a nonprofit, and it\u2019s really important to be passionate about the mission. The reality is that fundraising for a nonprofit is basically the same as doing sales for a corporation: both roles are about building relationships with people and bringing in more partners. However, the salaries for nonprofits and corporations are very different. If you want to work for a nonprofit, you truly have to believe in the mission and be willing to take a pay cut because you could be doing similar work somewhere else but for a much higher salary.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I miss how close everything was in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitkirksville.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirksville<\/a>. I was always only a five-minute drive from any of my friends. The city also has a cute downtown area with different places to eat and shop. I think this would be a useful class for anyone interested in fundraising or the nonprofit space.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What did we not ask that you think is important for people to know?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Truman offers a lot of different ways for students to get involved with the Communication major beyond just taking classes. It\u2019s okay to try a lot of things.
