Simultaneously, she worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefs.com\/community\/play60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Play 60<\/a> Youth Outreach Guide and Play 60 School Assembly host.\u00a0 She has also served as a Field Coordinator with the Chiefs\u2019 Game Entertainment department for the past five seasons. Along with her community involvement, she volunteers as a Scholarship Reviewer for the <a href=\"https:\/\/kcscholars.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KC Scholars<\/a> program and is a Chamber Ambassador for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcchamber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Chamber of Commerce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What year did you graduate and what was your concentration?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I graduated in May 2012 with an emphasis in <a href=\"http:\/\/communication.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journalism<\/a> and minor in <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=14&amp;poid=2127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spanish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What extra-\/co-curricular activities did you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I served as Vice-President and President for the Association of Black Collegians (ABC) from 2010-2012 and was the Sports Director for News36 (now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/News36KTRMTV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TMN-TV<\/a>) during my junior and senior years. I also volunteered for the <a href=\"http:\/\/wrc.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women\u2019s Resource Center<\/a> and worked for Truman <a href=\"http:\/\/tel-alumni.truman.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tel-Alumni<\/a>, a student-staffed phone-a-thon team under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truman.edu\/giving\/ways-of-giving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Advancement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1033\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1033\" class=\"wp-image-1033\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/McGee-ABC-e1548200912119.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/McGee-ABC-e1548200912119.jpeg 719w, https:\/\/blogs.truman.edu\/commspotlight\/files\/2019\/01\/McGee-ABC-e1548200912119-300x164.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angel and her friend Chris representing ABC at an Activity Fair on campus (2011).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Did you go to grad school?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nope, but I&#8217;ve considered it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What was your first job after graduation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was a Sports Marketing and Management intern for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mokanbasketball.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MOKAN<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/aausports.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAU<\/a> basketball organization based in Leawood, KS.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What are you doing now?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, I am the Manager of Communications and Outreach for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalsurbanyouthacademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy<\/a>, a youth non-profit organization under the Kansas City Royals. There is no way that I could have succeeded to where I am now without the classes and experience within the COMM realm.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Which class did you dislike at the time you took it, but now you\u2019re grateful you took it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=170&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Speaking<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.truman.edu\/content.php?filter%5B27%5D=COMM&amp;filter%5B29%5D=382&amp;filter%5Bcourse_type%5D=-1&amp;filter%5Bkeyword%5D=&amp;filter%5B32%5D=1&amp;filter%5Bcpage%5D=1&amp;cur_cat_oid=13&amp;expand=&amp;navoid=612&amp;search_database=Filter#acalog_template_course_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Communication Theory<\/a> were my least favorite courses, but have both been instrumental for all of my internships and current position. For the\u00a0 most part, everything was centrally located and made it easy to meet up with friends, study, or take a break. I loved the fact that I could walk from one side of the campus to the next in a short amount of time. This also means that off-campus locations are also within close proximity as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What would you say a COMM student should <u>absolutely<\/u> do while at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Get involved! While academics is the main priority for every student, my involvement with extra-curricular activities and student organizations gave me lifelong friendships with amazing people. Angel working at The K (2016).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What advice would you give someone who wants to go into the same line of work as you?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to put yourself out there.\u00a0 Internships and networking were the best tools for me, so use your resources! I wasn\u2019t afraid to reach out to my peers within the organizations that I worked for when a position of interest came open or if they had outside contacts that could help point me in the right direction.\u00a0 Also I didn\u2019t mind working or volunteering for as many hours that I possibly could to show my commitment and get the experience that I needed to succeed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What do you miss most about campus\/Kirksville?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everything! The cost of living, accessibility around Truman and <a href=\"https:\/\/visitkirksville.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirksville<\/a>, meeting up with friends at <a href=\"http:\/\/library.truman.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pickler<\/a>, the dining halls, sports events, and social gatherings\u2014all of it. I truly loved every moment of my time at Truman.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">What tag line would you create for the COMM department at Truman?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Success is written and you define it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">If you could come back to Truman and teach a class for a semester, what would be its title and what would it be about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Real World: COMM Edition.\u00a0 This would be a course about everything you need to know when transitioning into the post-college life and how to navigate through the journey of job searching.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Want to know more?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Angel is currently working on\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlb.com\/kcuya\/legacyseat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KCUYA Legacy Seat Campaign<\/a> for 2019.\u00a0 As the final construction phase for the new Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy facility in the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitkc.com\/18th-vine#sm.0001neqhtm18ycefpwfvh27n3h33v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; Vine District<\/a> in Kansas City, MO.\u00a0 So far, 784 stadium seats have been installed.
