Dr. Viguier and senior French student Michael Moore presented at the ACTFL Convention

From November 22 to November 24, Dr. Audrey Viguier and senior French major Michael Moore traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Conference’s (ACTFL) annual convention and world languages expo. ACTFL is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.

Dr. Viguier gave a presentation entitled “Business French an Asset for your Students.” She spoke about the importance of educating students in French for professional areas now that students are seeking different opportunities outside the scope of typical subjects like literature and history. The presentation also focused on the importance of recruitment for French programs and the ways in which French Departments can help their students to be more marketable when they enter the professional world. Michael added to the presentation by talking about his experiences taking Business French and French for International Relations at Truman. He also shared his participation in taking the DFP exam as well as how he has used his education in his professional life, such as his job translating for Kraft factory in Kirksville, and his searches for post-graduation employment. Both Dr. Viguier and Michael shared how vibrant and prosperous Truman’s French program has become. Overall the presentation proved to be very valuable for highlighting the benefits of introducing French for the Professions curriculum and sharing how to make these programs successful.
