Shannon Fetzner to publish paper: “Friendship in Horace’s Satires”

February 22, 2022

Shannon Fetzner (BA History 2021, MAE History candidate) has had a paper accepted for publication in the Classics undergraduate research journal Philomathes under the guidance of Dr. Amy Norgard (Classics). Shannon’s paper, entitled “Friendship in Horace’s Satires,” analyzes uses of friendship words – amicus and amicitia – by the Roman author Horace as conveying a deep sense of doubt about friendship as a means for Epicurean contentment, and doubts about Rome’s social structure and stability as Augustus consolidated power after a period of successive civil wars. Written in an undergraduate Latin class to fulfill her Latin minor, Shannon’s paper will be published in 2022. Congratulations!
