Dr. Stacy Davis has just published a book chapter
October 4, 2021Congratulations to Dr. Stacy Davis, who has just published a book chapter entitled “La alegoría metaficticia de la muerte del arte en Doña Berta” in an edited volume Crear entre mundos: Nuevas tendencias en la metaficción española (Editorial Albatros). In this chapter, Dr. Davis examines how nineteenth-century Spanish author Leopoldo Alas (“Clarín”) achieves a metafictional commentary on the death of high art through various framing techniques that turn the eponymous protagonist Berta into a work of art. By tracing the numerous metaphors of the protagonist as a work of art throughout the narrative, and also taking into account her spatial trajectory in the novel, Dr. Davis argues that Alas conveys a pessimistic message about the survival of art in the face of growing commodification taking place at the turn of the century.
