2019 Summer Study Abroad in Spain
May 27, 2019The 2019 Summer Study Abroad in Spain began on May 17 in Madrid, with ten participants and Dr. Stacy Bryant. The cultural immersion started with a stop for churros and chocolate, an emblematic Spanish treat. After a panoramic tour of historic Madrid, including the Gran Vía, Palacio Real, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and Plaza de la Cibeles, they experienced the Museo del Jamón, famous for its Spanish cuisine, especially jamón ibérico. The next day was just as full, beginning with a guided visit to the Palacio Real, followed by a walking tour through the oldest parts of Madrid, stopping at the Museo del Prado, to view priceless works of art, including numerous paintings by Velázquez and Goya, two of Spain’s most famous artists. The final stop in Madrid was to see Picasso’s master work Guernica, housed at the Centro Reina Sofía. The next destination was Toledo, where the group toured the narrow streets of this medieval city perched above the Río Tajo, stopping to view El Greco’s Burial of the Conde Orgaz as well as its beautiful cathedral. Finally, after an intense weekend of historical sites, students arrived in Salamanca, their homebase for the next 7 weeks.
