One of Ricardo Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez Alem\u00e1n’s paintings on display in the University Gallery.<\/p><\/div>\n

The University Gallery is welcoming Truman State University\u2019s new painting professor, Ricardo Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez Alem\u00e1n, by hosting his exhibition Within My Borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think coming in with an exhibition is great,\u201d said Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez. \u201cIt gives the students the opportunity to get to know me as an artist, not just their teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before coming to Truman, Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez spent two years conducting observational research at the southern U.S. border dividing El Paso, Texas, from Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez, Mexico. Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez is from Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez, and wanted to go back to his roots after spending many years living and teaching in the Midwest. He spent this time at the border researching the conflicts people face at the line dividing the two nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a study of the problematic social events that happen on the south borders relating to politics, immigration, and religion,\u201d said Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez about Within My Borders.<\/p>\n

Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez uses painting as his mode of storytelling. He said he uses a process of underpainting and glazing from the 16th and 17th centuries. He calls his work a constant experimentation and makes modifications by applying new techniques in background lighting, layering, paint thickness, and sizing. Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez loves working with a paintbrush has been inspired by many artists over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of my inspirations include Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, and many more,\u201d said Qui\u00f1\u00f3nez. \u201cIt is possible to see other people\u2019s influences in my work because I admire many artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within My Borders will be on display in the main gallery from January 21 to February 26. An opening reception with refreshments will be held in the University Gallery on Tuesday, January 26, at 6:00 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
