Larry Gawel, a Nebraska artist whose tintypes are on display in the University Art Gallery’s “Hunter\/Gatherer” exhibition will be in the gallery this Friday, October 24 at 2:00 pm to discuss his work. Mr. Gawel’s images document his encounters with the landscape and the plant and animal life he hunts, gathers, and consumes as food. The tintype process he uses is an antique method of capturing photographic images that cuts him off from the latest digital methods and creates hauntingly beautiful images of food as the connection between ourselves and our environment. This event, like all others associated with this exhibition, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
During his visit, Mr. Gawel will also\u00a0be working with students, faculty, and classes in the Art Department.<\/p>\n
In addition to being an active studio artist, Gawel also teaches photography at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska. \u00a0His beautiful tintype photographs are made using a traditional photography process.<\/p>\n
