What “On the Edge” is about

March 30, 2010

Writing Center consultants are on the edge.  They’re on the edge between student and teacher, sage and coach, authority and peer.  They’re walking contradictions.  They’re on the edge because the writers with whom they work drive them to the edge–to the edge of joy, confusion, thoughtfulness, anger, triumph, and change.  The edge cuts two ways–or three or four.  Consultants explore the edges of words and ideas, testing the surrounding ground for solidity and fertility.  Consultants are on the edge like Burroughs’ Tangiers crew: they slice the world into pieces to see how it works when it’s re-arranged, when ideas are juxtaposed and presuppositions scissored into a change of part.    Writing Center consultants are at the center but on the edge.
