November Student of the Month: Jonah McKeown
The picture is of me and my new friends from study abroad in Helsinki, Finland wearing the traditional overalls worn by Finnish students. It’s a tradition dating back to the 1980s that students decorate their overalls with unique patches, and the color corresponds to your academic department. Standing on that hill in my yellow overalls, I felt entirely at home with the other Finnish students. I may have been incredulous at first, but the tradition of wearing one of the least fashionable items of clothing imaginable– and using it to slide down a hill– is apparently very good at bringing people together. Would it catch on back home in Missouri? Unlikely. But participating in aspects of culture that are new to you is what studying abroad is all about, right?
