Truman State University Health Science students tied for second place in the 2012 American Association of Health Education (AAHE) Case Study Competition.   Truman team members were Gina Hansen, Lisa Dworak, McKenzie Tate, and Ali Coats (alternate).   There were nine teams competing in this national competition, and each team had ten minutes to explain their program and media campaign for this situation.   Dr. Janice Clark entered the team in the competition, but AAHE Case Study Competition rules do not allow faculty members to assist them with the solution to the problem.  The team members received the problem and rules for the case study two weeks before the March 14 competition and traveled to Boston, MA to compete.  Due to a massive power failure, the convention was cancelled and the students had to videotape their presentation and submit it for judging.   Student teams were evaluated on how well their solution met the following criteria:

Creativity and resourcefulness;  Attribution of Sources;  Professionalism; and Meeting the seven CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist) areas of responsibility.

Eastern Illinois State University won first place, with Truman State University and University of Florida tying for second place.

Jennifer Zweifel, a Health Science major at Truman State University and an All-American track athlete was named the first runner-up in the Miss Missouri pageant held in Mexico, MO on Saturday, June 9th.  Jennifer is pictured here with Miss Missouri and her court.   (Jennifer is on the far left.)  CONGRATULATIONS!  *Note:  Jennifer is the fourth HES student to be a Miss Missouri finalist!

Jordan Morgan (ES, May ’11) has accepted a job as the Senior Clinical Research Coordinator of the Harvard Orthopaedic Trauma Service in Boston, MA.  In this role, Jordan will oversee all of the orthopaedic trauma research at all of the Harvard affiliate hospitals (Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital-Boston, etc.)  Jordan says:  “My field experience really opened some doors for me. In fact, I was recently appointed as a Research Associate at Harvard Medical School, which is very exciting, especially because I am the only non-MD or Ph.D Research Associate at HMS in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery! Truman prepared me very well.”  CONGRATULATIONS Jordan!

Sam Friedman, Exercise Science senior, was fortunate enough to be accepted for a 10 week Summer Internship in Atlanta Georgia with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League for the Summer of 2012.   Sam’s official title will be Group Ticket Sales Intern and he will be working in the Front Office within the Ticket Sales Department.   Throughout the summer Sam will be responsible for tasks such as selling tickets via telemarketing and establishing new relationships with youth and community organizations, as well as working booths at various community events.   Sam said “It will be an exciting experience, not only working with a professional sports team, but to be living by myself in a city that is much different than Kirksville.  I am more than positive that the hard work and dedication which I’ve learned at Truman throughout my first three years will only help throughout the internship.”   We look forward to hearing about your experiences.  CONGRATULATIONS SAM!

The Jack C. Bowen Memorial Garden Dedication Ceremony was held on Saturday, June 2, 2012. There were approximately 150 people who attended the event to honor Jack’s memory. Dr. Chris Lantz opened the ceremony, followed by reflections on Jack’s life from Dr. Larry Boleach. Jack and Melba’s sons also spoke briefly. Camden Stockton, (December ’11 Grad with ES Major and Bus Admin Minor) will be attending West Virginia University, beginning June 14, 2012.  Camden will be completing the MBA program for the first year and working on the Masters in Sports Management during his second year.   Camden’s Graduate Assistantship is in the Mountaineer Athletic Club with the annual fund.  This program requires working on game days and helping WVU retain funds from donors for scholarships, etc.  The Sports Management program has over 200 applicants every year and only 20 are selected.   In addition, only a handful of students are accepted each year for the dual degree program that Camden will be participating in.   West Virginia University’s MBA program is in the top 5% nationally.   CONGRATULATIONS CAMDEN!
