MAE Students Attend Write to Learn Conference

February 22, 2017

Eight Secondary English MAE students and professor Barbara Price attended the annual Write to Learn conference in Osage Beach, Missouri, on February 16-18.  Pictured at the keynote address by poet Nikki Giovanni are (seated left-right) Janae Fritze, Katie Bailey, Julianne Dworak, Megan Dice, Lauren Ragsdale, Rachel Davis, and Lydia Whitacre.  Standing: Jessica Wilke and Barbara Price.

Jessica Wilke was Truman’s recipient of the Robert J. Greef Award, which is presented annually by the Missouri Council of Teachers of English at the Write to Learn conference.  The award is named in honor of a former MCTE president, Robert Greef, who was an outstanding teacher at the University of Central Missouri, and recognizes one student from each English Education program.  Criteria for the award include academic excellence in the field of English education, leadership, character, and participation in university activities.   Jessica completed her internship in the Hazelwood district in Fall 2016.  While at Truman, she has been active in Upward Bound and has achieved numerous academic honors.  She hopes to teach middle school language arts or high school English in an urban/low-income district in the greater St. Louis area.
