Speech Team: already gearing up for NationalsOctober 5, 2010
The Truman Speech and Debate team traveled to Illinois State University this past weekend to check out the site of the 2011 National Championship Tournament. Of the four students attending, three were freshman, but all were entered in varsity events. “I wanted the novices to be entered in the varsity category so that they could see where the bar is set. It is a sort of trial by fire…and they may crash and burn the first time, but they do learn where they need to be by observing the best of the best,” reasoned Scholten. Junior Andrew Grojean (Blue Springs, MO) won the 6th place trophy in varsity persuasive speaking the first half of the tournament and clinched the 5th place persuasion award on the second day. “Considering that there were 50 individuals competing in the event, placing so highly is an accomplishment in which we can take pride,” said Dr. Scholten.
